Early-music enthusiasts filled the pews of St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., Friday night for a taste of 17th- and 18th-century Spanish colonial music.
The Arizona Early Music Society's final concert of 2005, "Villancicos Y Cantadas de Navidad," featured El Mundo, a seven-member ensemble of accomplished musicians and vocalists specializing in Spanish, Latin American and Italian music from the 16th through 19th centuries.
The tunes ranged from quieter numbers featuring solo performances by each instrument to faster-paced songs with sounds from all seven members uniting to fill the entire chapel.
Director Richard Savino demonstrated his knowledge of the show by explaining the various rhythms and giving the audience an idea of the sounds they would soon be hearing.
