Roughly 65 percent of Marana voters have approved so-called “home rule,” which allows the town to spend more than state-imposed budget restrictions, according to early results.
In 2013 voters approved home rule, which is also known as alternative expenditure limitation, by a similar 2-to-1 margin. Marana voters have OK’d home rule every time it has appeared on the ballot since 1985. There are roughly 25,000 registered voters in Marana.
If home rule were not to be passed, the city would be able to spend only $54.1 million in fiscal year 2018, roughly $64 million short of estimated expenditures.
