The Pima County Board of Supervisors appointed Walter Weber to be the new Ajo justice of the peace.
He replaces Maria Alvillar, who resigned in June after a state audit found "significant record-keeping and case processing deficiencies" at her court.
"In recent months I've provided 'pro tem' judicial services in Ajo and have become acutely aware of the deficiencies and problems existing there now," Weber said in his application. He said he would make it his mission to correct the problems.
Weber was a deputy county attorney in Ajo in the 1970s and has served as a justice of the peace or justice of the peace pro tem since 1991. He earned a master's degree and a law degree from the University of Arizona.
