ANDERSON, Patrick S.

ANDERSON, Patrick S.

ANDERSON, Patrick S.

Native Tucsonan, and one of the proudest Americans to grace the face of this earth, Patrick S. Anderson, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at the age of 92. One of 12 children, SSgt Patrick S. Anderson served proudly as a member of the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War, and was considered by many to be a member of one of the "Greatest Generations". Pat was one of few who fought and survived one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific on the small island of Iwo Jima. Upon his return, he met and married his best friend and love of his life, Doris. Over the next 71 years of marriage, they raised a family of three children, Patrick Jr. (Carol), Janet, and Carol (Doug), and enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren, Jason, Jared, Jessica, John, Erin and Kyra, as well as two very special great-grandchildren, Flynn and Ava. The highlight of his life revolved around his passion and commitment to excel and succeed in life and in business. In 1963, based on the organizational strength that he learned in the Marine Corps, Pat made the critical decision to go into business for himself, and established Anderson Painting Co. After 55 years of success, the business continues to thrive, due to the perseverance and adherence to his basic fundamental principles of offering the highest quality and best service available in the industry. Pat made an indelible impression, and left an everlasting imprint in the hearts of those who crossed his path over the years. In honor of his true character, we will carry on his legacy of integrity, generosity, love of family, and the rewards of hard work. On behalf of Dad and our entire family, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the entire staff at Peppi's House for their extraordinary care and compassion. In Pat's memory, we are planning an open house to celebrate his life on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Anderson Painting and Powder Coating Co., 6210 S. Country Club Road, starting at 2:00 p.m.

ROBBINS, Philip Alan

ROBBINS, Philip Alan

passed away peacefully at home in Phoenix, Arizona on the evening of March 20, 2018, after a short illness. He was born on August 2, 1932, to Catharine Elizabeth (Veach) Robbins and Harold Robbins in Greencastle, Indiana. On Phil's 5th birthday, he traveled with an aunt by train from Indiana to Arizona to join his mother, father and younger sister, Marian, after the family relocated for his father's health. He grew up in Tucson; the "Old Pueblo" and the Arizona Wildcats have always held a special place in Phil's heart. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1955, and completed his JD in 1956 at the University of Arizona College of Law. After clerking for a U.S. District Court judge in Los Angeles, Phil's first job as a trial lawyer was in San Diego, California, as an Assistant District Attorney, where he remembered prosecuting the only horse-stealing case in San Diego in a century. Phil moved home to Arizona with his wife and young family in 1958, after he accepted a position at the firm of Moore and Romley. In 1973, he founded, with several colleagues, the firm of Robbins, Green, O'Grady and Abbuhl, which flourished as a well-respected legal presence in Arizona over the next 33 years. Phil then spent three years as Special Counsel to Jennings, Strouss and Salmon, and served as Special Counsel to Sandweg and Ager, P.C., from 2008 until his retirement in 2017. Recently, his practice included domestic and international arbitration and mediation, although for the majority of his career he was a trial lawyer, litigating commercial disputes, antitrust cases, and torts. He was a mentor to many young professionals, demonstrating legal skills, and communicating the importance of professional respect, civility and perseverance. Over the decades, Phil held membership and leadership roles in many law-related, business and cross-border organizations, including: Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers; and Diplomate in the American Board of Trial Advocates, where he also received the Professionalism Award. He was inducted into the Maricopa County Bar Association Hall of Fame in 2010; was the Past Chair of the State Bar of Arizona International Law Section; and was Past President of the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association. He enjoyed a long-time affiliation with the American Inns of Court. His international affiliations included serving as Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Law Center for Inter-American Free Trade; Past Chair of the U.S.-Mexico Bar Association; Past President of the Arizona-Mexico Commission; Past President of the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission; and Past President of the Border Health Foundation. He was a member of the Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations and the NAFTA Advisory Committee on the Use of Mediation and Arbitration in Private Commercial Disputes. He was a member of the Arizona Supreme Court's Arizona-Sonora Judicial Cooperation Project, and an observer delegate with the UNCITRAL Working Group on Model Arbitration Law. One of his most treasured experiences was serving as an election observer with former President Jimmy Carter in Indonesia and Honduras. He was a faithful member and Past President of the Arizona Business Alliance for over 30 years. He was a delegate to a White House Conference on Small Business, a former Board Member of the Phoenix Opportunities Industrialization Center, was a member of the University College of Law Board of Visitors. Up until his death, he was a member of the Executive Board of Vote Smart-Facts Matter. Phil had a passion for travel, once stating his interest in travel was piqued by Richard Haliburton's Book of Marvels, a childhood gift from his parents. He traveled all over the world, and once noted: "If you go as a traveler and not a tourist, there are really no disappointing places, even the ugly ones with bad food and lousy weather." He loved the outdoors, and hiking was a delight to him, from Arizona to the Andes in Peru and beyond. Phil loved the study of language, especially Spanish. He discovered a Latin cultural oasis in Phoenix at Interlingua, where he participated in the center activities and Spanish classes until he became ill in February. Phil was a life-long lover of opera and theatre. He admired all great and honest art. He was looking forward to further developing his skills as a painter; his art studio at home was nearly complete. He had a keen interest in politics, and understood well the importance of good governance in a free society. His intellect, humor, insights, wisdom, patience and steadfastness will be greatly missed by many. Phil was predeceased by his parents, and by his daughter, Melanie Robbins. He is survived by his loving and beloved wife, Carolyn; his daughters, Jennifer Robbins, Phylis Robbins, Susan Robbins (Tammy Perkins), Melanie Davis and Lauri Jordan (Laura Somerville); by his sister, Marian Kohl; by his first wife, Mary Stewart Robbins; by his nephew, Brad Kohl and niece, Barbara Kohl and their father, John Kohl and many other relatives, dear friends and colleagues. A Celebration of Life Service will take place Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Orangewood Presbyterian Church, 7321 N. 10th St. Phoenix, AZ 85020. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the "Vote Smart-Facts Matter" organization (www.votesmart.org) or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by A.L. MOORE GRIMSHAW MORTUARY.

TODD, James Richard

passed away on April 2, 2018 surrounded by friends and family. Jim (sometimes affectionately referred to as Toad) had lived a good, full life by the age of 68. He fought a courageous battle with cancer.A Corner will never be the same. None of us will ever be. His charm and wit drew people to him. Jim was a graduate of Princeton and William and Mary in Evolutionary Biology. We all now know the difference between a bug and an insect, a bite and a sting. Very bright, he loved reading and sharing his information with us. In addition to being an avid reader, Jim loved to travel, he loved all kinds of music, was a gourmet cook, and an enthusiastic volunteer every week at the Desert Museum. Having grown up in a Pittsburgh suburb, Jim was a passionate Steelers fan. Jim had a career of 37 years of being a financial advisor with A.G. Edwards and Wells Fargo. He enjoyed his interactions with his clients, who were more like friends. His co-workers were supportive throughout his career to the end. He is survived by his wife, Tuni, his inherited son, Gaffney; his sister, Julie Cundiff; brother-in-law, Jim Cundiff and a bunch of wonderfully dedicated friends who feel like family because he was a wonderful friend to all . No date has been set for a Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Desert Museum or a cancer charity of your choice. We are all blessed to have been in the presence of the Toad. VARNEY, Geneva Sue

went Home to Heaven on March 21, 2018. Geneva Sue was born to Elbert and Ella Emans in Erick, OK on November 20, 1931. Shortly after, they moved to Springfield, Colorado where Sue spent the majority of her childhood, then once more to Guymon, OK, where Ella opened her own laundromat. It was in Guymon that Sue met and made many lifelong friends, including the love of her life, Billy Joe Varney. The couple married on March 25th, 1951 and attended Panhandle State College together before transferring to Oklahoma State University. Billy Joe was offered a position as Director of the Student Union at the University of Arizona in 1958, so the family moved to Tucson, AZ, where they would stay the remainder of their lives. Geneva Sue and Billy Joe raised five daughters, Kathy, Shelly, Vickie, Penny and Tracy. She handmade many of their outfits and always volunteered to be their classroom mom in school. Sue remained loyal to the Arizona Wildcats through and through. She and Billy Joe could always be seen cheering on the football and basketball teams from their season ticket seats, and Sue could tell you every softball player's name. She was also President of the UofA Faculty Women's Club, and found time to actively participate in PTA, Methodist Women's Group, Rotary and Assistance League. Along with her own children, Sue served as a surrogate mother to countless exchange students around the world, always offering her home to those looking for a new experience. Sue certainly had her own share of international adventures as well, traveling with her husband to all seven continents, including Antarctica where she got to meet her favorite animal, the penguin. She walked along the Great Wall of China and witnessed elephants getting drunk from fermented fruit in Africa. At home, she enjoyed playing tennis and attending book club with her many friends. She was also a member of a lunch group that proudly called themselves the Gay Senoritas. No matter where she was, Sue's favorite thing was to be with her family, especially Billy Joe. She is survived by her five daughters, Kathy Martin (Jeff), Shelly Bock, Vickie Scheufler (Steve), Penny Enright, Tracy White (Greg), and her ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. VASQUEZ, Carlos A.

VASQUEZ, Carlos A.

94 years old, a Tucson Native and WWII vet died on April 3, 2018. Carlos who was active almost until the day he died had a positive outlook on life and enjoyed the last four years living with his daughter, Renee and her husband, David Timothy. He spent his weekdays at the Armory Senior Center exchanging stories with the new friends he met. Many of his stories described his time in the Army as a Combat Engineer and his role in the D'day invasion of Normandy where his unit landed on Omaha beach. He earned two purple hearts during his tour of duty. After returning to his hometown of Tucson he married his wife, Isabel who shared a life with him for 67 years. They had two children including their son, Carlos. Both preceded him in death. He also shattered barriers by becoming the first Mexican-American member of IBEW Local 570. He was a cornerstone of the local union and during the 70 years he was a card carrying union electrician he held many elected positions including local union President for several terms. He concluded his working career as the electrical instructor at Tucson Job Corps where he steered many young people into the electrical trade. Most people describe him as a good guy and a really nice man. He would consider both a true compliment. His family and community will miss him. No services are planned. Arrangements by FUNERARIA DEL ANGEL.
