Jean Addison

Jean Addison

ADDISON, Jean Whiting

passed from this life on January 1, 2021 on her own terms and in her own time. Born in 1917, the daughter of Methodist Minister Herbert R. and Ethel M. Whiting, she traveled through her life with grace, dignity and whit. A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women, she then married William B. Addison, Sr. He worked for his father and eventually became the owner of The Addison Tiling Company in Cleveland, Ohio. They enjoyed a summer house on Lake Erie, Red Bird, where all the family voted her the best pie maker in town. Cherry was the all-around favorite, but there were too many delicious flavors to count!

After periodic visits to Tucson to be with family and friends, they became enraptured with the open spaces, horses and never-ending stunning sunsets. Bill had ridden his horse over the property and said to Jean, "This is it!". They designed, built, and decorated their gracious home in the foothills on the east side. From then on during the warm summer sunsets, they would sit on the veranda of their home with a cocktail in hand and welcomed whoever stopped by. Bill and Jean Addison purchased Evergreen Cemetery in 1960, established July 1, 1907, later becoming Evergreen Mortuary and Cemetery. Bill passed in 1993, and Jean continued as owner of the business until the sale in 2014.

Jean always supported Bill and her family with advice, strength, and a beautiful smile. As matriarch of the family, Jean utilized her inner intuition and loving guidance in her quiet way. Mother's hallmark sense of humor, always appreciated, was never at one's expense. This gentle lady set an example that has become quite scarce these days. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to know and love her. Jean is survived by her three children: Anne (Hoyt) Vandenberg, Jr., William B. (Barbara) Addison, Jr. and Jeffrey A. Addison; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. A private family service will be held at EVERGREEN MORTUARY AND CEMETERY. Donations can be sent in her honor to The Humane Society of Southern Arizona or the charity of your choice.

Kreszenz Cooper

Kreszenz Cooper

COOPER, Kreszenz Cynthia

It is with great sadness we announce the death of Kreszenz Cynthia Cooper (Oma), 92, of Tucson on December 13, 2020. Oma was born in Hagen, Germany to Jacob and Agatha Lieb on April 2, 1928. Oma immigrated to the United States in 1952, and in 1954 she took the oath for U.S. citizenship. A local newspaper reported on the oath ceremony and said Oma took the oath in "flawless" English. Oma arrived in Tucson in 1955 and began working for Pacific Finance. In 1960 she met Truman Cooper (Opa) and on October 12, 1960 Oma and Opa married in Las Vegas after driving from Tucson and arriving at midnight. The judge that would marry them was on his "lunch break", so they had to wait until he returned to perform the ceremony. Oma and Opa were founding members of the German American Club of Tucson. Oma was quite the cook and she and Opa enjoyed entertaining their friends and fellow club members. After 13 years at Pacific Finance, Oma went to work for Southern Arizona Bank which later became First National Bank of Arizona and then First Interstate Bank. Oma ultimately became a trust officer and retired from First Interstate Bank in 1987 after 32 years in the finance industry. During her retirement, Oma and Opa traveled extensively. In addition to trips back to Germany, they visited North Africa, Scandinavia and the former Soviet Union. To prepare for their Soviet Union trip, Oma took two years of Russian language classes at the University of Arizona. She also continued to cook for the family and serve complete Thanksgiving dinners well into her late 80s. She was quite uncompromising in her wishes that no one was to bring anything to add to dinner or to help her clean up. Oma loved her grandchildren and liked nothing more than sitting in the backyard watching the grandkids swim while knitting blankets she donated to children in need through Project Linus. Opa passed away in 2012, but Oma continued to keep busy doing crossword puzzles and reading mystery novels. She always looked forward to the monthly book sales by Friends of the Pima County Library. She never neglected to keep up on the current political climate with her beloved CNN and was very generous in sharing her thoughts of this with others. Oma is preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by son, Shawn (Inger) of Tucson; daughter, Sheree Oesterling (John Cammarano) of Marana; grandchildren, Preston and Shelby of Indiana, Heather and Frankie Oesterling of Marana, Hailey Oesterling of Texas and great-grandchild, Payton Isabelle Alexander of Marana. The family wishes to extend its thanks to Casa De La Luz Hospice. A private service will be held. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.

He made many friends in his work and was described as giving and loving. He was known for his kind spirit, sweet smile, and his undying love of music and motorcycles.

Herman had the honor of coaching the Arizona High School South All-Stars in 1966 and 1971 as well as coaching the Arizona High School All-Stars against the Utah All-Stars in 1978. Our Mother joined our father in heaven January 1, 2021, after suffering many years with dementia. Her personality and grace shined through every progression of this mean disease. In 1952 she married her high school sweetheart Ronald (Ronnie) Hessick. They had five children by 1957. It was that year Dad proclaimed, "when they start coming in two's, it's time to stop". Our parents raised us back in the good ole days, "BC", before computers. Mother was the definition of a homemaker; she was a lifelong member of PEO, a smart collector; and loving mother to Sherrie L. Standish (Michael), Michael J. Hessick (Deceased), Shelley A. Peabody (Mark), Kim L. Eason (Richard), and Karen L. Bender (David), and a grandmother to thirteen grandchildren and great-grandmother to fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, parents, and sister. (And she helped deliver her first grandchild in a home birth!)

Brett Kugler

Brett Kugler

KUGLER, Brett Russell

40, passed away on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was born in St. Joseph's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona on March 24, 1980 to doting parents, Barry and Janet Kugler.

Brett was a bright, mischievous, and high-energy kid. His parents loved him very much but were also very busy trying to keep up and hoped he would lose his penchant for getting into trouble. Spoiler alert: he did and found something greater. He was also a cherished big brother who was a secondary dad to his little sister, Lindsey.

As a child, Brett put his high energy to good use playing on the youth soccer team his dad coached and also played baseball. His love for basketball began in middle school and continued into high school where he played for the Sahuaro Cougars. He won team awards for his hustle but somehow couldn't get out of bed for class without his mom threatening him. He played hard and picked up skills at Lute Olson's summer basketball camps at the University of Arizona.

Brett was always a smarty-pants. He hit his educational stride later in life. Brett divided a Wildcat household by graduating from Arizona State University. He later got his master's at the University of Cincinnati. With both his bachelor's and master's degrees in criminal justice, he became a real-life version of a superhero. He developed an undeniable love for service in pursuit of justice.

He graduated from the Memphis Police Academy in November of 2012. Through his tireless aid to the Memphis community, he developed a bond stronger than steel with his fellow officers. His first family is forever grateful for the love and friendship shown to Brett by the officers, their families, and his friends in a city that was originally not his own.

Brett garnered high praise that surprisingly never went to his head. He received commendations and numerous awards for his excellent work in the Memphis Police Department including Officer of the Year for the Airways division in 2015.

He discovered a zest in life for country music, trips to Nashville, and cementing memories with his family in blue. Always the animal-lover, it was not unusual to see Brett feeding a stray dog with the food and treats he kept in his squad car. He would cart them around Memphis on crisp, cold nights with his heat on to keep them warm.

Brett will be remembered for his sardonic sense of humor, his love for movies, his limitless kindness, and the generosity he showed others. He made an incredible impact on the world and those that loved him will never forget him. He left too soon and will be deeply missed.

Brett is survived by his father and mother, Barry and Janet; sister, Lindsey; his aunt and uncle, Jackie and David Eazer; his cousins, and extended family.

William Laman

William Laman

LAMAN, William H.

It is with a sad heart that we share with you that our dear Bill passed away peacefully on New Year's Day, January 1, 2021. Bill was born in 1928 in Binghampton, NY to Henry and Gertrude and after living in several towns in New York and Pennsylvania the family settled in Waverly, NY. There Bill graduated from High School and went on to play Coronet in the Army Band during his service in Japan at the end of World War II. After his service Bill returned to upstate New York to build his first home while raising a family of two daughters, working and attending night school. It is that work ethic that would define his entire life. Soon Bill was hired by IBM, launching a 38-year career in engineering and management. The family moved to Boulder, Colorado where Bill finished his degree in Mathematics and Engineering. Although Bill was raised hunting and fishing with his father, it is in Colorado that both became a true passion highlighted by a trophy elk taken on a hunting trip to Budges in the Flat Top Mountains of Colorado. Yet another change in life brought Bill to Tucson, Arizona where IBM had a new opportunity. It is there that met his wife, Margrit and together with her children they filled their years with travel to Colorado and building a retail business. Bill retired from IBM to devote more time to the growing retail business and his love for travel and fishing. Being in nature was his love and while his hunting days were behind him, his passion and skill for trout fishing continued into his 90s. It's a passion he passed on to the next two generations.

Bill is survived by his wife, Margrit; his children, Carol and Irene; his stepchildren, Laurie and Jeff and their children and grandchildren, in addition to his sister, Norma and his brothers, Don and Henry.

Please celebrate with us all the wonderful achievements that were part of his life, the people whose lives he touched, his jokes that made us laugh, his integrity and strength and his kindness. May the heavens have many a trout stream and angels who are anxious to learn from the best.

The family wishes to extend its gratitude and appreciation to the teams at Harmony House and Casa de la Luz for the dignity and loving care given to Bill.

A Celebration of Life is planned for later in the year when Covid no longer controls our lives. Donations in his honor can be made to either the Humane Society, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Fund or the Go Fund Me page of Harmony House, Tucson.

Allen Rathbun

Allen Rathbun

RATHBUN, Allen Shea

On Wednesday, December 30, 2020, Allen Shea Rathbun, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Tucson at the age of 86.

Allen was born in Fairfield Township in southern Michigan to parents Leland and Florence Rathbun in 1934 and grew up there alongside his three siblings. He married Mary Jane McCance in Weston, MI in 1955. Together, they had three children, Phillip, Timothy, and Julee. Allen served for two years in the United States Army, stationed at the Schofield Army Barracks in Hawaii. He later moved with Mary and their children to Tucson, AZ, where he began his career as a letter carrier with the USPS in 1962. He retired from the Green Valley Post Office in 1993 and enjoyed a long retirement with Mary in Arizona.

Allen was a kind, gentle, and quiet man. Above all else, he treasured spending time with his family. The devotion and affection he had for his wife, Mary, was truly a privilege to witness. He had a strong faith in God and was a member of Christ Community Church in Tucson. Allen liked watching all types of sports and was particularly fond of baseball. He was also an avid reader. He could often be found sitting with his feet up in his favorite armchair lost in a fiction novel. Equally, he could routinely be found hard at work doing upkeep and maintenance tasks in and around the house. During the summer, he and his wife Mary escaped the heat of Tucson to their peaceful home in Pinetop-Lakeside. They enjoyed daily walks around the lake, sitting together on the deck in the cool mountain air watching the local wildlife, and visits from their children and grandchildren who often came to stay.

Allen will be lovingly remembered by his best friend and wife of 65 years, Mary, and their children, Phillip, Timothy, and Julee (Robert), grandchildren, Cody, Allyson, and Eric, and great-grandson, Keegan. He will also be fondly remembered by his sister, Mary Lou (Eugene) and his brother, Richard (Joyce). Allen was predeceased by parents, and his sister, Ethel.

Charles Rood

ROOD, Charles

Chuck has ended his earth-bound odyssey on December 26, 2020. This kind and smart man is known in Tucson as the community-minded volunteer for tax assistance and as a loyal fun friend ready for good times, a travel adventure or giving good solutions to daily events. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a graduate of East Grand Rapids High School and Brown University, Chuck, the engineer and planner, was in the Navy, had careers that took him ever onward to practical applications in big companies, a start-up project, managing a federal project and finally financial advising with a Certified Financial Planner designation. A life-long sailor, who raced on inland lakes, cruised big sailboats on the east coast and Caribbean with his wife, Shane and many friends. A man of many talents, retirement allowed summers cruising on their trawler. Chuck loved travel and enjoyed opportunities on five continents. A role model for many, Chuck was Rotary Citizen of the Year, and Rotary District Treasurer three times, President of the YMCA, Board member of the United Way and of the Silver Museum in Connecticut. We are all wiser for our love and the life of this special man. He is survived by his wife, Shane. Sonja Schacht

Sonja Schacht

SCHACHT, Sonja A.

As the surviving son of Sonja A. Schacht, I will recount a life taken too soon by the ravages of Covid at the age of 72, December 31, 2020. She was a proud veteran of the US armed forces and retired after 25 years of service. She loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team and would frequently serve as an usher. Soon after moving to Tucson, she made new friends at The Frozen Cactus where she would watch the games. She loved food but almost always remarked that it needed more sauce. She loved to travel and often reflected warmly on time spent in Germany, Hong Kong, and Hawaii.

Granny is survived by a rich array of close relatives scattered between Arizona and West Virginia. Her son, Dale; daughter-in-law, Karen and granddaughter, Sophia resided near her on the east side of Tucson. The proximity allowed frequent impromptu visits. Two sisters and a brother, Ruth, Mary and Jimmy, are bereaving near Charleston, WV. Her passing left behind a number of grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in various parts of the country. Other important people in her life can be found in Lincoln, NE. Thank you, Julie and Delores, for everything.

In lieu of flowers, we are asking that you make a contribution to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

Thanks to all her caregivers from Home Instead and AllCare, with special love and affection to long-term caregiver and best friend, Ruth Barnett. She was a crafty lady who loved quilting and crocheting. Knitting always eluded her but she gave it her best effort many times! Her fur babies had a better life than most people, and we know she looked forward to meeting those that predeceased her at the Rainbow Bridge.

She loved listening to all kinds of music and asks that you play Elvis' version of 'Amazing Grace' as you think of her.

Sandra Witthoft

Sandra Witthoft

WITTHOFT, Sandra Olive Price

left this earthly adventure Saturday morning, January 2, 2021. Shortly afterward Sandie's family of her husband, three sons, and their families headed to her favorite spot on Mt. Lemmon to celebrate her life—releasing balloons and toasting her with hot chocolate.

Sandie loved exploring the world, traveling with friends and family to experience and understand what else was out there. Her qualities of curiosity and service show in the legacy of her work and the people she connected through her unique combination of talents: helping kids and adults as an educator, designing homes, and creating community through events and organizations. As an optimist, Sandie was deliberate about the difference between creating a positive and avoiding a negative. Her energy invited everyone to join the party, as she always found the fun and shared her excitement in living.

Sandie supported organizations that help people and create delight locally, including St. Luke's Home; Peppi's House; the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum; and the UofA College of Fine Arts. Just as Sandie sparkled for others, she found recent strength in the care offered by her community of physicians, friends, and family. Her wish for those seeking to celebrate with her now was to find a favorite spot and let a balloon go while smiling with her. Smiles forever! Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
