Mary Barfield

Mary Barfield

BARFIELD, Mary "Bonita"

74, of Sahuarita, AZ, peacefully passed from this world to her eternal home on October 15, 2020 in her home surrounded by family. She was a wonderful wife and soul mate, a fantastic mother and the best "Grammy" to both her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be a "Celebration of Life" Service on Tuesday, October 27, 2020. It will be held at Green Valley Baptist Church located at 1111 N La Cañada Dr., Green Valley, AZ 85614. The time will be 2:00 p.m. AZ time. The service will all also be streamed and recorded. You can view the service at https://gvbcaz.com/live/. This service will be limited because of COVID precautions. Social distancing and masks will be required.

Bonita was born in Broken Bow, OK on March 18, 1946 to parents, John L and Winona "Inez" Smith. She married the love of her life and best friend, Larry Barfield, on May 28, 1966 in Phoenix, AZ. Their lives and marriage were based on their faith in Jesus Christ from their first date until her last breath. Bonita worked for 30 years, to the day, for Tucson Newspapers. She enjoyed retirement for many years with her husband Larry. For 20+ years, Bonita and Larry were very involved at "Casas Church" serving in the children's ministry loving and caring for babies and toddlers on Sundays. Bonita loved playing the clarinet in the Casas Church Orchestra during those years. In 2007, Bonita and Larry moved to Sahuarita, AZ to help start "Common Ground Church Sahuarita". She is lovingly called the "Matriarch" of the church. One of the phrases that Bonita was heard saying regularly at the church, on social media, and frankly to anyone who would listen was, "We serve an AWESOME God." Bonita also had a nickname that she loved and was very proud of. She was called "Mrs. Coach". For 40 years her husband Larry coached multiple sports for Flowing Wells Jr High and High School, Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, Sahuarita High School and Walden Grove High School. While her husband Larry was on the sideline coaching, Bonita would faithfully be in the stands cheering on her husband and yelling words of encouragement to generations of young athletes.

Bonita is preceded in death by her father and mother, John L and Winona "Inez" Smith and father and mother-in-law, Bennie "Sport" and Lois Barfield.

Bonita is survived by her partner in marriage of 54 years, Larry Barfield. Her two children and their spouses, Ben and Jill Barfield, as well as BoLynda and Steve Masseth. Bonita is also survived by her sister, Junelle Smith and her brother and his wife, John and Vivian Smith. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren, Ashley and her husband James Toussaint, Brandon and his wife Michaela Barfield, Daniel Masseth, Brittany Barfield and Zackary Barfield. Lastly, she was so proud of her new great-grandchildren, Archer Barfield and Jeremiah Toussaint.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in memory of Bonita by mailing a check to the "Arizona Southern Baptist Convention" at 12801 N 28th Dr #1, Phoenix, AZ 85029. Or online at https://azsbc.org/. These donations will be used to start new churches in Arizona, North America and around the world. Arrangements by OASIS CREMATION AND FUNERAL CARE.

Douglas Donahue

Douglas Donahue

DONAHUE, Douglas J.

We are sad to say our beloved father Douglas Donahue passed away September 25, 2020 exactly six months after losing his wife of 72 years, Dee Marie (March 25, 2020, also pictured). Some say he died of a broken heart.

He was born on "Douglas" Street in Wichita, Kansas, while his parents were traveling from Minnesota to California, to begin their new life in the West.

Growing up with his siblings Dolores and Leo, he was the ultimate California boy, camping in the San Gabriel Mountains, and body surfing in the Pacific. At 16, he drove his Model A across the Pasadena Freeway on its opening day in 1940.

WWII followed. Doug volunteered for the Navy, while his mother was a "Rosie the Riveter" at the McDonnel Douglas' aircraft plant. He never saw her again. During officer training, she collapsed and died at age 39. Doug was later assigned to command landing craft for the invasion of Japan. After Japan surrendered, he transported troops back from the Pacific.

Returning to school, Doug met his future wife, Dee Marie Moore, at the University of Oregon. They married in 1948 and remained devoted partners for 72 years. Doug earned his PhD in Nuclear Physics at the University of Wisconsin and moved to Washington to work on General Electric's nuclear reactor. He loved Academia, took a professorship at Penn State University and, in 1963, began a 37 year career at the University of Arizona, including time as Chairman of the Physics Department.

Doug was a pioneer in Carbon 14 dating. In 1983, he assisted in establishing the USA's first accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon laboratory. He radiocarbon dated materials across the world including dating the Shroud of Turin to the 14th Century and the Dead Sea Scrolls to the 1st Century.

Doug's career was Physics, but his passion was his family and community. He taught the value of hard work, education, community engagement, compassion and generosity and choreographed family travels across the United States, Mexico and Europe, including sabbaticals in Oxford and Munich. He served with the Sam Hughes Neighborhood Association and was president of the St. Vincent DePaul Conference. He was an active tennis and badminton player into his nineties, competed in the Arizona Senior Olympics, and medaled in the National Senior Olympics in 2001 and 2007.

Doug is survived by his sister, Dolores; children, Mary, Patrica, Margaret, Shivaun and Doug; grandchildren, Lorna, Jack, Theo, Andrew, Tim, Tom, Sean, Ian and Ana Maria and great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Justino and Jack. A funeral mass and celebration of life will be held in Tucson for Dee and Doug when Covid is behind us. Donations can be made in Doug's memory to St. Vincent De Paul at Saints Peter and Paul, Tucson.

Robert Duckwiler

Robert Duckwiler

DUCKWILER, Robert "Bob" Douglas Jr.

Bob Duckwiler Jr. passed away on October 20, 2020 at age 73. Bob was born in Ogden, UT to Robert and Georgia Duckwiler Sr., and he was very proud of his Native American Chippewa heritage. In addition, he was proud to serve in the United States Army. After leaving the military, he taught high school physical education, math, and science, as well as coached high school baseball. He spent the remainder of his career as a self-employed contractor. Whether he was in the classroom, on the construction site, or on the baseball field, Bob had a gift for teaching. Bob found peace fly-fishing, and through his time spent on the river, developed a passion for the conservation of our freshwater rivers and streams. Most important to Bob was his family. Married for 46 years, Nancy and Bob's love for each other could be seen in the way Nancy would light up laughing even though she had already heard Bob's many hilarious stories over and over again. Bob was devoted to developing his son Justin into the man he would become through spending countless hours together. For Justin, Bob was more than a great father, he was a best friend. He loved spending time with his three grandsons and his voice could always be heard cheering them on from the stands (as many friends and unlucky umpires can attest to.) He is survived by wife, Nancy Duckwiler; son, Justin (Rochelle) Duckwiler; grandchildren, Max, Sam and Ty; brothers, David (Rina) Duckwiler and Lee (Carol) Duckwiler and sister, Mary Krachmer. He is preceded in death by parents, Robert Duckwiler Sr. and Georgia Schoenherr and sisters, Dolly Clodfelter and Denise Duckwiler. Many thanks to the wonderful nurses and doctors at Wilson County Vanderbilt Hospital.

No services are planned at this time. If you would like to honor Bob, please make donations to Trout Unlimited tu.org or PO Box 7400, Woolly Bugger, WV 25438 or The American Indian College Fund, standwithnativestudents.org. Arrangements by SELLARS FUNERAL HOME, Lebanon, TN 615-444-9393.
