STRAYER, Edna Ellen Bishop

STRAYER, Edna Ellen Bishop

STRAYER, Edna Ellen Bishop

passed away on Monday, March 27, 2018 at the Forum in Tucson where she had resided for the last three years. Edna was born September 5, 1915 in Monticello, Iowa to George and Lucinda (Schneider) Bishop. Edna was raised in a loving home and fortunate to have many family members nearby. At age 11 both of her parents had died and her older sisters were insistent on keeping the family together. They moved the family to Waterloo, Iowa where Edna went on to graduate from East Waterloo High in 1933. Before and after graduation she was employed at J.C. Penny. Her supervisor was Ray Strayer. A romance blossomed and they eloped on December 3, 1934. This was the beginning of a life and love together for 81 years. Edna and Ray lived and worked in Waterloo (with short stints in Independence, MO and Iowa Falls, IA) until Ray was drafted into the Navy in 1943. In 1944 Edna and children moved to Los Angeles, CA. Although Ray was serving in the North Pacific it was a way to be a little closer. When the war was over and Ray was discharged they moved back to Waterloo. In 1949 they once again moved to Iowa Falls, IA. In addition to full time jobs they owned and operated Ray's Drive In. It was a family affair with Roberta as a car hop, Dick in charge of the grounds and kitchen supplies and Cindy at age 7 washing and sterilizing root beer mugs. Despite her working, Edna kept the home fires burning where friends and laughter were always present. She enjoyed cooking and happily prepared delicious meals for her family. Home-made noodles with beef, oyster stew, minced ham were among family favorites along with special treats such as peach or cherry cobbler, strawberry shortcake, and banana, lemon meringue or rhubarb pie. In 1949 she was first in our area to prepare a dish called pizza pie. They moved to Tucson in 1958 and once again Edna worked at J.C. Penny. As usual the house was a meeting and greeting place for their many friends. One time there were so many visitors she and Ray turned the house over to them and they stayed in their Air Stream. In Iowa and Arizona she was active in school, church and community. As a Girl Scout leader in Waterloo she and the girls marched in many parades. This was reminiscent of her clarinet playing as a student in the high school's marching band. After retirement Ray and Edna traveled the U.S., and the world. It was fortunate that their children lived at different times in the Philippines, Thailand, Germany, Peru, Okinawa and Canada. They also enjoyed going back to their roots in Iowa and spent many summers in Minnesota visiting and camping with family. Fishing and camping in the White Mountains was a welcome summer get away while picnicking in Sabino Canyon and on Mt. Lemon were Tucson favorites. Edna is survived by her daughters, Roberta (Phil) Soderberg and Lucinda Biagas; daughter-in-law, Louise Strayer; eight grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; son, Richard; son-in-law, Albert Biagas; grandson, Robert Soderberg; sisters, Florence (Ivan) Martin, Winona (Jack) Bullemer, Della Phennecie (Clarence) Broessel and Edith; brother, Roy; one half-sister, Emily (Russell) Simpson and two half-brothers. Edna will be missed by all who knew her and fondly remembered forever by her loved ones. A Celebration of Life for an amazing 102 year old will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank all the caregivers at the Forum, the caring staff from Casa de la Luz and the comfort and support provided by Reverend Dr. Delle McCormick and the Call and Care committee from Rincon Congregational Church. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.
