Dabney Altaffer

Dabney Altaffer

ALTAFFER, Dabney R.

92, passed away on September 2, 2020. The son of Maurice and Jeanne Rocher Altaffer, he began his life in Tucson at the Stork's nest. He spent his early years in Nogales, where his father was the American Consul. With the start of World War II, the State Department transferred the family to Germany and later to Switzerland. Dabney spent his formative years in Europe, where he learned to speak five languages. He returned to the States to attend Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where he met Katherine Worth, the love of his life. He served in the Army and was stationed in Germany.

He returned to the States in 1952, where he and Katherine were married. They moved to Tucson, where Dabney received his law degree from the University of Arizona. He and his friend, William E. Strickland, established a law firm that specialized in Indian Law, where they spent many years representing the Tohono O'odam, Ak-Chin and Quechan Indian nations. They were eventually joined by their two sons, and their long and fruitful partnership flourished.

Dabney believed in giving back to the community and over the years he served as president of the Board of the Arizona Heart Association; was on the boards of Green Fields Country Day School and the Arizona Women's Clinic; was a member of the Board of Directors and of the Presidents' Circle of Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona; and was a member of the Pima County, Arizona State, and American Bar Associations.

He spent his later years traveling with Kate and enjoying the company of his family. He was a kind and loving man who took particular delight in his family and grandchildren.

Dabney was preceded in death by his wife, Kate and son, William. He is survived by his son, Thomas (Pam) Altaffer; daughter-in-law, Colette Altaffer and grandchildren, Alexander and Katherine. At his request, funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.

Sylvia Bosnos

Sylvia Bosnos

BOSNOS, Sylvia

99, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and longtime Tucson resident, died peacefully September 4, 2020, leaving a void in the hearts of all who loved her.

Born December 8, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York to Max and Esther (Strenger) Sabbeth, Sylvia was the sixth of seven children in a close-knit family. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn and continued her education at Brooklyn College.

She met her husband, the late Alfred G. "Al" Bosnos, in Washington, D.C. during World War II and they were married March 7, 1942. Following the war they moved west to Tucson, where Al joined his family's business, Sylvia worked for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, and they brought up their four children.

Sylvia was devoted to her family. She treasured visits with her siblings and extended family on the East Coast and enjoyed introducing them to the Sonoran Desert and the charms of the Old Pueblo during their stays in Tucson. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel the world, visiting many countries as well as hiking and trekking throughout the U.S., sometimes accompanied by her daughters. She loved music, all types of dancing, the outdoors, horseback riding, and was an avid hiker with the Southern Arizona Hiking Club, leading group hikes well into her eighties. She delighted in introducing her grandchildren to the wonders of nature, and they looked forward to camping or hiking with their grandma.

She was an accomplished cook and baker, and her joy was entertaining at home, preparing special dinners for family and friends and sharing her delicious pastries as gifts. She had a natural curiosity about the world around her and was a lifelong learner, often attending concerts, lectures, dance performances and museum exhibits. Over the years she was active with Congregation Anshei Israel, Temple Emanu-El and the Jewish Community Center. She enjoyed participation in many varied groups including the Tucson International Folkdance Club, bridge and Mahjong clubs, Tucson Singletarians and Hadassah.

Preceded in death by her parents, her six siblings, and her beloved daughter Elaine Bosnos Money, Sylvia is survived by her children, Lorna "Loni" (Abdelkebir el Qaicomi), Michael (Judy) and Charles (Mary Ann) and by her four adored grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren and her dearly loved nieces and nephews.

Her family thank the staff at Starfish Care Homes, Midtown Tucson for their kindness, compassion and exceptional care during her latter life.

Sylvia will be deeply missed and her memory cherished. Memorial gifts may be made to Doctors Without Borders, www.doctorswithoutborders.org, or to the Southern Arizona Hiking Club, PO Box 32257, Tucson AZ 85751-2257. Sylvia's ashes will be spread at a future date. Arrangements by ANGEL VALLEY FUNERAL HOME. Sylvia's Facebook page will remain open, and all are welcome to post remembrances of her there.

Terry Lason

Terry Lason

LASON, Terry

63, passed peacefully on August 13, 2020 after battling a long illness. Born and raised in Eastside Tucson, Terry was a fearless adventurer educated by the school of hard knocks. Most people considered 6'3" too tall to pursue a career as a jockey, or 150 pounds too skinny to withstand the intense punishment of Chinese Bok Fu Do martial arts training, but with a wanton disregard for the limitations of others, Terry chose to live by his own rules.

A genuine horseman through and through, he learned to ride before he could walk. With his heart fully captivated by the magnificent beasts, he began an early career working with racehorses, eventually becoming the youngest trainer to ever claim first prize at Rillito Park at the tender age of 16. Despite a pitching prowess that led to an offer from the Cleveland Indians straight out of high school, thoroughbreds were his passion. This pursuit led to a dozen moves in six states including a stint working for a Kentucky Derby winning trainer until he eventually married and fathered two sons, his oft-declared proudest achievement.

He selflessly sacrificed to better provide for his family, deciding to return to the family restaurant business in Tucson, managing and eventually owning the O.K. Corral steakhouse for over 20 years. Much of his twilight years were spent fishing, cooking, golfing, watching sports, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Terry was deeply loved by his family and his quick-witted jokes, wry smiles, and hearty laugh will be dearly missed. At the same time, we are happy for him to be reunited to the two loves of his life: his long-term partner Mary and his favorite horse Bronze Idol, upon whom there can be little doubt he is currently riding off into the sunset.

Pre-deceased by parents, Jim Lason and Doris Knight; sister, Holly Lason and partner, Mary Sales. Survived by sons, C.J. (Lindsey) Lason and grandchildren, Ivy, Betty and Jack of Phoenix and Toby (Christina) Lason and granddaughter, Isla of San Juan Capistrano, CA; and ex-wives and dear friends, Nancy Olmstead and Susan Henderson.

Arrangements made by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to TROT. Terry's life will be celebrated in a private family setting, where his ashes will be scattered in the place where he was most at peace.
