Patrick Brennan

Patrick Brennan

BRENNAN, Patrick J.

Pat knew he had found true love the moment he met Mary and danced to "Stranger in the Night." Three days later, he asked the widower, who had two boys, to marry him. And so, began the nearly 50-year journey together, starting in Chester County (PA) and retiring in Tucson a decade ago. They adored their family and friends, golfing, the Philadelphia Phillies, traveling (especially to Ireland), and visits to Cape May. His beloved wife passed in June 2020 and he followed on July 27, 2020. Pat, an Army veteran, had many talents including golf, pickleball, softball, crossword puzzles, guitar playing and singing, and making everyone smile from his sharp wit. He loved Western movies, especially those featuring John Wayne, as well as sporty convertibles. In his career, Pat was a CPA, having worked for Arthur Young Accounting Firm, Key Chemical, and Environmental Resources Management (ERM). Years ago, he also regularly taught a finance course at the University of Pennsylvania. Pat is survived by son, Rick and wife Barb, and their children, Brooke and Mitchell and his wife Stacey; daughter-in-law, Paula and her daughter, Madison; sister-in-law, Kathy and her daughters, Carolyn (and family) and Karen; niece and nephews Karen, Bob, and Craig (and their families); and his cousins (from Chester, PA). In addition to his wife, Pat was preceded in death by his son, Doug. His family finds comfort in the Irish blessing. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Santa Catalina Catholic Church, the SaddleBrooke Senior Softball Association (SSSA), or the SaddleBrooke Pickleball Association. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE HEATHER CREMATION AND BURIAL.

Booker Burns

Booker Burns

BURNS, BOOKER T. JR.

Passed away on July 14, 2020 from a heart attack. He was survived by his wife Susan Burns; his five sons, Andrew, Adam, Craig, Michael, and Zachary and eight siblings. He was buried in Marana Veterans Memorial Cemetery on July 24, 2020. Booker was a humble man, a gentleman who always had a way of making you feel good about yourself. His kindness permeated everyone around him. Everyone who knew him would say he was a quiet man who always knew of his surroundings. He was patient and kind. He held such warmth in his heart, he was timeless with age. He would treat a man his own age with the same grace and respect as the teenager looking for kind words and a sympathetic ear. Booker also loved his friends through every blemish we incur as humans do. He always made you feel at home in his presence in the most beautiful way because he believed in the best in everybody. He will always be remembered dearly by those who knew him. He will be missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Carmen Christy

Carmen Christy

CHRISTY, Carmen Crittenden

Carmen Crittenden Christy, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, avid horsewoman, birder, artist, published author, gourmet, lover of the arts, literature, history, travel and nature, passed away on July 19, 2020, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 74. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 22, 1946, to parents Daniel LaMar Christy, Jr., and Joan Walmsley (Christy) Galloway, Carmen grew up in Fremont, Ohio, and Tucson. Throughout her life, she spent her summers in Kagawong, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada, and Carmel, California. Following graduation from Tucson's Valley School for Girls, she studied English and Modern Dance at Denison University. In 1966, she moved to New York City with her first husband, where their daughter Olivia was born, and she worked as a researcher for political historian Theodore H. White on The Making of the President 1968. In 1969, the family relocated to Tucson, where Carmen volunteered for Young Audiences of Southern Arizona and the Tucson Museum of Art.

From 1971 to 1979, Carmen lived in Patagonia, Arizona, where her daughter Carolyn was born. The family managed a private guest ranch and spent evenings and weekends riding and caring for the horses, which Carmen loved. During these years, she received a Master of Education with a focus in Reading from the University of Arizona, while teaching 8th Grade English in Nogales, Arizona. A natural teacher, she engaged her students in historical and cultural reenactments and projects such as the bicentennial reenactment of the Juan Bautista de Anza Trek of 1776. She later helped establish the US border to California section of the National Park Service's Juan Bautista de Anza Historic Trail.

Carmen's volunteer work for the Santa Cruz County Historical Society led to a role contributing in volunteer development at The Arizona State Historical Society and membership in the American Association of State and Local History. In 1988, she returned to Tucson and served as Director of Development for the Arizona Opera Company, The YMCA Foundation of Southern Arizona in Tucson and Tohono Chul Park. She was a member of several civic organizations, served on numerous professional and philanthropic boards and committees, and was an active member of St. Philip's In the Hills Episcopal Church. She retired in 2002.

As with everything else in her life, Carmen embraced retirement. She crisscrossed the country and Canada in her purple Dodge van, traveling with friends and visiting family. She enjoyed numerous Southwest canoe trips, rafted twice down the Colorado River, and went bird and whale watching in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago. Her summer and afterschool "Grammy Camps" ensured time with her grandchildren Julia and Ian, which she relished. In her native Ohio, Carmen worked to establish the Christy Farm Nature Preserve. In Tucson, she studied drawing and entertained writing groups with fascinating stories of food, travel, and childhood in the Old Pueblo.

In 2011, Carmen met and married Walter Ridley. Together they explored the world by land, river, and sea. They took several cruises around Europe, the Baltic, Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. They traveled in Spain and visited London and Paris. Their final adventure was cruising around South America and kayaking in the Straits of Magellan. At home in Tucson, they bicycled every morning along The Loop, grand-parented birds nesting on their property, and walked their dog, Rocky. They cherished one another and their time together.

Her parents, stepfather, Charles Edwin Galloway, brother, Daniel Lamar Christy, III, and sister, Tamsen Elise Christy preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Walter Ridley, daughters, Olivia Crittenden Manders (Eric-Jan) and Carolyn Christy Laurie (Jesse William), grandchildren, Julia Elise and Ian William Laurie, stepdaughter, Janeese Duke, and her extended family. The family will hold a celebration of Carmen's life when it is possible to safely bring family and friends together again. Carmen's smile and energy lit up a room. Hers was a life well lived. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Paton Center for Hummingbirds via the Tucson Audubon Society or the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

Wanda Stauffacher

Wanda Stauffacher

STAUFFACHER, Wanda

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Wanda on July 17, 2020, after a dignified and graceful battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born and raised in Texas, Wanda moved to Tucson with her oldest children in 1963, where she began a long career as an educator in the Tucson Unified School District, earning graduate degrees in Exceptional Education and Counseling, before retiring as counselor at C.E. Rose Elementary School. Fiercely independent, Wanda was a trailblazer for single moms in the 1960s as she made Tucson her new home. In her 57 years here, she contributed immeasurably to the community and forged countless friendships.

A devoted foster parent, and later a host for pregnant teens, her home provided peace and stability for kids over the years, including those who stayed in touch through adulthood. Wanda went on to train and mentor foster parents, facilitate community-based parenting classes for grandparents, and conduct grief counseling groups and stroke support groups with her husband, Robert. As a board member of Tucson Clean and Beautiful, she took an active part in the Trees for Tucson program and initiated city-wide Stephen Ministries training in Tucson in the 1980s. She also volunteered as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate for children).

After retirement, Wanda continued to serve the community as a private counselor and became a host of her own Bed and Breakfast, making life-long friends with many of her guests. She was a talented seamstress and expert crafter, who never ran into a project she couldn't successfully accomplish with style. Known for her sense of humor, Wanda made friends wherever she lived, worked, or worshipped. Her faith was an especially important part of her life and she was actively involved as a member of Catalina United Methodist Church, and later at Christ Church United Methodist in Tucson.

Wanda's last twenty years were spent with her best friend and husband, Robert Stauffacher, whose love and devotion made the last chapter of her life her best and happiest. They shared a passion for serving others and above all enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and each other. Wanda's days were filled with laughter, gratitude, and purpose. Those who knew her found her to be warm and genuine, and loved her wholeheartedly. Truly, she was an extraordinary human.

She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Robert; daughters, Pamela Francis (Tom) and Melinda Hershey (Jerry) and son, Trey Black (Susan); her grandchildren, Kvar Black, Maximilian Francis, Maia Teegarden (Sam), Zane Hershey and Sam Hershey; nephews, Robert Woody (Julie), Sterling Woody (Leigh), Jay Stauffacher (Dawn) and nieces, Christy White (Jim), Lisa Cookingham (Jerry) and Lori Kay Stauffacher.

She will be missed greatly. Due to current health concerns a memorial service will be held in Tucson at Christ Church United Methodist at a future date.
