Dorothy was born in 1930 into a close-knit family in Humboldt, Kansas. She was the youngest in her family of seven. She married the love of her life Lloyd Barnett in 1947. They and their ever-growing family lived there until 1961.The family then moved to a suburb of Chicago and that is where their fifth child and many grandchildren were born. On December 28, 2020, at age 86, Sergio B. Cavazos earned his Angel wings after his battle with COVID-19. Sergio migrated to Tucson in 1962 from Sonora, Mexico to become a United States citizen, where he and his wife pursed the American Dream and raise their children. Like many immigrants, he started as a migrant worker, picking crops in Arizona and throughout California. As his family began to grow, he worked as a waiter to be close to home. This led to Sergio and his wife, Maria, to open a Mexican restaurant, Café Pitic in the late 1970s. In the mid-80s, Sergio became an insurance salesman, a profession he retired from in 1997. During his retirement, he enjoyed exploring his love of cooking by experimenting with new dishes and making family favorites. He also loved social media! You would find Sergio for hours on Facebook connecting with family and old friends sharing funny posts and recipes. Sergio was a giving person who was committed to serving the Catholic church. He served as a eucharist minster and volunteer at Saint Mary's Hospital. Sergio is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maria A. Cavazos and five children. His loving devotion to his family will forever leave a mark. He wanted the very best for his family than the hard life he endured growing up. His memory and love will live on with those he leaves behind. A celebration of life service will be held virtually on Sunday, March 7, 2021 on Sergio's birthday. Gerald Merrell

MERRELL, Gerald Don

After a tough surgery and complications with Covid 19, Gerald Don Merrell passed away peacefully in his home just before dawn on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at the age of 79. He was in the company of his loving daughter and son for home hospice care after a three-month battle.

Jerry, as his friends and family called him, was well known for having a passion, some might say obsession, for crafting with wood. Whether he was making a cabinet for his family, making a bowl for a friend, or turning an urn for someone he loved, the beauty that he put into his craft was truly awe inspiring. If you were lucky enough to receive one of Jerry's finished projects, you absolutely knew that what you received was crafted by a true artist and wood master.

Jerry was born in Los Angeles and grew up on a small farm in Hobbs, New Mexico. After meeting his wife Alicia, the two x-ray technicians eventually settled down in Tucson and adopted two children. Jerry was a cowboy at heart who loved country music and western movies. Often seen in western attire wearing one of his favorite cowboy hats, Jerry always brought a smile to people's faces with his friendly demeanor and stories of life and wonder. Jerry was also known for being an amazing devoted father and tata, loving brother, true friend, hard worker, and appreciator of good whiskey and tequila.

Jerry is survived by his son, Matthew; daughter, Lisa; grandchildren, Riley and Sabrina and brothers, Richard and Michael. Anyone who knew Jerry knew he loved his wife, Alicia with all his heart and is peacefully resting with her now. Jerry will be missed dearly by all. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

Sidney Smith

Sidney Smith

SMITH, Sidney Bert

10/9/1928 - 3/4/2021

Sidney Bert Smith passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at the age of 92 years while in hospice care in Oro Valley, Arizona. Sidney was born on October 9, 1928 in Long Beach, California. He was taking a bath during the devastating Long Beach earthquake in 1933 and had to run out into the street in his bare essentials to escape! Sidney went to the University of Arizona to complete a BSc in Geology. While there, he met his wife of 66 years, Luella Herndon, on a blind date. Sidney was drafted for the Korean War and spent a couple of years in Japan where he learned to ski which became a lifelong passion. Once back, he and Luella were married and moved to Jackson, Mississippi to start his career as an oil and gas geologist with Phillips Petroleum. Both of their daughters, Carol and Joanne, were born in Jackson. The family moved several times through company transfers and finally ended up in Denver, Colorado. Sidney's parents had a cabin in Durango. He and his family spent many wonderful vacations there. The cabin had a 1955 Willys jeep that Sidney loved to take up into the mountains on old mining roads. In 1966, he was offered a transfer to Phillips' Canadian subsidiary, Pacific Petroleums in Calgary, Canada where his career blossomed with promotions in Pacific and later Petro-Canada and moves to Canadian Superior and Mobil Oil. During this time, his son, Don, was born. Sidney's oil and gas exploration accomplishments were featured in the book, 'The Blue-Eyed Sheiks'. He was also very proud of his volunteer time with the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics where he was a driver for Russian athletes. When Sidney retired, he and Luella moved to Oracle, Arizona and built a house on land next door to his brother, Jon. The two brothers were very close and would go jeeping together on trails around Oracle. They would stop in a secluded area, preferably with a tree for shade, and target practice with an assortment of pistols then cook hotdogs over a small campfire. In his sixties and seventies, Sidney took up another passion, cycling. He entered bike races like the El Tour de Tucson where he was one of the oldest competitors to finish the 100-mile course. Sidney and Luella moved to Oro Valley after he had heart surgery. Sidney leaves his wife, Luella Smith; children, Carol (David) Byler, Joanne (Arnie) Ferster and Donald Smith. Sidney was extremely proud of his six grandchildren, Shannon and Julie Byler, Steven and Dan McArthur, and Nolan and Gillian Smith. Sidney was predeceased by his parents, Bert and Lois Smith and his brother, Jon (Dorcas) Smith. At Sidney's request there will not be a Memorial Service. The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at Oro Valley Hospital, Copper Health and Transitions Health for their compassionate care of Sidney in his last days. Helga Withers

Helga Withers

WITHERS, Helga Adele "Tiffany"

7/25/1938 - 2/28/2021

It is with a heavy heart that the family of Tiffany Withers announces her passing on February 28, 2021. She is now peacefully at rest after a lengthy battle stemming from a brain tumor/lymphoma, which led to surgeries, multiple chemotherapies and radiations, followed by several strokes. Born in Vienna, Austria, Helga's early years were in wartime Europe often sequestered in one room, hiding for extended times. Her mother, an American citizen, was able to escape a Russian detention center and flee to the US with her only child when Helga was eight years of age. The small family settled in Chicago where she attended Catholic boarding school and majored in accounting in college. In the late 1950's, having grown into a charming, exuberant, beautiful young woman, Helga won a coveted position as a flight attendant with Delta Airlines (before jets).

She married the love of her life, Dr. James "Jim" Withers, in the late 1960's after they met by chance at a "Parents Without Partners" event in the Washington, DC, area. By this time, her first marriage had ended, and Helga was a single mother of three young children; Jim was a divorced father of three similarly aged children. It was love at first sight for Jim, who swept her off her feet and nicknamed her "Tiffany", because to him she was a jewel. The melded family put down roots in the northern Virginia suburb of Reston, where Tiffany discovered a love of golf which she and Jim played often. Along with the six kids, they took hilarious camping trips and had many fun adventures waterskiing and snow skiing.

In 1976, the family relocated to the Cleveland area; five years later Jim took a position with Atlantic Richfield which brought the family to Tucson. Within several years all six of the children completed their high school and college educations. Tiffany and Jim were among the first members of Ventana Country Club in 1985 and among the first to build a stand-alone home in Ventana in 1987. Over the years Tiffany found joy playing in multiple Ladies' golf groups, and she was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church where she and Jim formed lifelong supportive friendships. Tiffany and Jim were blessed with the opportunity to travel the world and often spent time relaxing at family gatherings in their Coronado, California, condominium.

Tiffany exuded hospitality and charm and she was gifted with the ability to make others feel comfortable and welcome. A ready smile on her face, she could strike up a conversation with anyone who crossed her path. She had an eye for style and (together with Jim) Tiffany designed, managed the construction of, and decorated five homes in the course of their 53-year marriage. She was in her element while solving design challenges and sourcing materials, and she took great pride in sharing the fruits of her labor while entertaining friends and family at home.

She will be greatly missed by her beloved husband, Jim; her six children and their families, including six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and another on the way. A celebration of Tiffany's life will be held at a future date when it is safe to gather together. A special thanks goes from the family to the loving caregivers at Starfish Care Homes and Susan at TMC Hospice who provided wonderful care and comfort to Tiffany and her family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tiffany's honor can be made to St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 3738 Old Sabino Canyon Road, Tucson, AZ, 85750. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY.
