CRONK, James Mahlon

CRONK, James Mahlon

CRONK, James Mahlon

"Mom, how come when I was 2, I knew everything, and now I'm 7 and don't know anything?" Mahlon, 47, died October 2, 2018 in Tucson. He lived his life in Colorado Springs, Tucson, and Cincinnati, graduating from Indian Hill High School and attending the University of Cincinnati before finally settling here in his early 20's. An avid rock climber and hiker, "Jimmy" was climbing and exploring the world since he first climbed out of his crib and escaped the house. He had a clever sense of humor, a savant like memory, was an independent spirit, gifted marksman, swimmer, golfer, writer, photographer; a fan, friend, and amateur historian of the U.S. Navy SEALs. He had "ride alongs" with the fire dept and admired firefighters everywhere. He enjoyed sailing and scuba diving, but the highlight of his adventures was crewing on the "Talaria" on it's trans Atlantic crossing from Mallorca to Antigua. Dear to him were his motorcycles, Land Cruiser, each of his cats and all the beautiful women who were part of his life. Mahlon loved meeting people and was well known for long telephone calls to friends and strangers all over the globe. Surviving are his mom, Sonie Robinson, Tucson; dad, Michael Mahlon Cronk, Port Ludlow, WA; sister, Kelly Cronk, Tucson; stepsisters, Julie Robinson (Gary Sullivan) Tucson, Laurie Robinson (Emmanuel Fratianni) Santa Barbara, CA, M'Liz Robinson (Cal Allendorfer) Silver Spring, MD. Predeceasing was his stepfather James L. Robinson Jr. We will carry Jimmy in our hearts forever and find comfort that his struggle with addiction is over. There are no further memorials, but gifts in his name can be made to the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, with the hope that this epidemic can be lessened and we can stop losing our children to this disease. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY.

FREEMAN, Valerie

FREEMAN, Valerie

FREEMAN, Valerie

87, on Friday, October 12, 2018, Valerie (Val) Therese Freeman, age 87 of Tucson, boarded the 9:10 a.m. Angel Flight to Heaven's Gate. Adorned in Prayers and Love, she soared to Heaven's Gate, on the wings of a Dove! The Gate opened wide on St. Peter's word, and the Angels sang the sweetest songs you've never heard! The transition from the ephemeral to the eternal is now complete!!! Val passed away peacefully with Barry, her devoted husband of 64 years by her side. Val was born on October 30, 1930 in Thunder Bay (Fort William), Ontario, Canada. Her parents, Peter and Bae McCallum, along with her brother, Peter, preceded her in death. Val herself was a breast cancer survivor. Most important to Val were her roles as wife, mother, sister and friend. She married the love of her life, Barry Freeman, in April of 1954. Together they raised four children. The household was filled with love and laughter. Strong-willed and spontaneous, Val was always on the go and doing something. She was known for her care and concern for others and she would spend as much time as necessary helping family and friends in need. She volunteered for a number of years at the craft store "The West" which is a volunteer-run store specializing in gifts, and needlework supplies with profits returned to the community in the form of grants to local-area charitable organizations with an emphasis on those serving women and children. She was also remembered for her meticulous craftwork. Val was a prolific artist, doing petit point, needle point, quilting and stained glass. Over the years, she gifted a countless number of her works of art and love to her lucky family members and friends. Her radiant personality and smile shone brightly wherever she went and she always had that special twinkle in her eye. In 1981, one of the most memorable experiences of her life occurred when she and Barry embarked on the adventure of a lifetime and moved to Lesotho, Southern Africa where they remained for nine years. Lifelong memories and friends were made during that time. Val is survived by her husband, Barry; her sister, Bernice; sons, Scott (Kelly) Freeman of Carrollton, TX, Mike Freeman of Tucson, AZ; Paul (Beth) Freeman of Cottonwood, AZ; and daughter, Kelly (Keith) Corson of Vail, AZ; along with four grandchildren, Kelly, Andrew, Kayla and Daniel. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for Val at Sabino Canyon Rehabilitation Center, and Casa de La Luz Hospice. The family also wishes to express thanks from the bottom of their hearts to mom's most faithful private caregiver Greta Springhower (Home Instead), for all of the love and care provided when the family could not be at Val's side. Visitation and Rosary will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway Blvd. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church, 1375 S Camino Seco, with a reception in the parish hall following the Mass. For those wishing to send flowers, they may be sent to BRING'S for delivery on November 1. For those wishing to make donations in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Val's name to either Gospel Rescue Mission, Susan G. Komen Foundation, or the Special Olympics which were all organizations near and dear to Val's heart.

KYLE, Roy W.

KYLE, Roy W.

KYLE, Roy W.

Born in Tucson on January 27, 1948 to his beloved parents, William C. Kyle and Bernice Goff Kyle. Roy died on September 20, 2018. He was with a number of his loved ones when he gently passed. Roy was raised in Tucson and graduated from Catalina High School, the University of Arizona and the University of Arizona College of Law. He loved Tucson and Southern Arizona, and he never left. He spent much of his early life working with his Uncle Joe Goff and cousin Charley on the Goff Ranch. The work was long and hard. Perhaps it was there that he learned two of his greatest virtues: never complain and always have a wicked sense of humor; they stayed with him throughout his life. Roy was a big, strong man who looked tough, but was truly the gentlest and kindest of men. That kindness and gentle concern for others was at the heart of our great friend. From his early days at public school to his college and law school years and on through his professional life, Roy made many friends who were friends for life. He thought he was the luckiest of men to have such great friends. His friends thought they were the luckiest. Such is true friendship. From the day he entered law school, Roy was quiet, reserved and rarely spoke; however, it soon became apparent that he had an exceptional mind. He excelled as a student, despite the fact that he worked his way through law school. The jobs he had were physical, often at night, and didn't pay too well. He never complained. His diligence and great sense of humor guided him. Upon graduation in 1973, Roy joined the Tucson firm of Robertson Molloy Fickett and Jones (later Molloy Jones and Donahue). He was there for 19 years. He was a partner at Brown and Bain (now Perkins Cole) from 1993-2002. He finished his career at Lewis and Roca and retired in 2017. Roy was an outstanding lawyer, but to find that out you had to ask others because he totally refused to even hint at his achievements. He was named among the Best Lawyers of America in 2012, 2016-2017 and was Lawyer of the Year in 2012 and 2015. He had a thriving practice in Banking Finance Law and Mergers and Acquisitions. His practice focus was on the development, negotiation and implementation of organizational, financial and transactional strategies for business. Importantly, Roy was recognized as one of the finest bond lawyers in Arizona. He was also responsible for the legal aspects of the successful "privatization" of the University of Arizona Medical Center and was its outside general counsel for 26 years. Among his professional affiliations were the American Health Lawyers Association, the Arizona Association of Health Care Lawyers, the Pima County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Throughout his career, Roy made lifelong friends among his colleagues, among those who practiced on the other side of transactions and among his clients. He was always fair, and he was usually the smartest person in the room. Roy is survived by many loving family member and countless friends. His family members include his wife, Kathrine Kyle; his son, David Kyle; his stepchildren, Chandra Prough (Gregg) and Brandon Callister; his grandchildren, Anisa and Lucas Kersten and Ainsley and Tyler Prough; his sister, Ruth Misevch (Lee); his nephew, Michael Misevch (Gwen) and niece, Shelly Misevch; his beloved cousin, Charley Goff (Connie); Charley's children, Seldon Goff, Kaylee Orr and Emily Goff; and his daughter, Whitney Kersten (Eric). A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the 3C Ranch, 36033 South Mount Lemmon Road, Oracle, Arizona. Directions can be found at www.3cranchaz.com. Donations in Roy's honor may be made to Tucson Conquistadors Foundation, 6450 E. Broadway, Tucson, Arizona 85710 or to Habitat for Humanity, 3501 N. Mountain Avenue, Tucson, AZ 85710. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.

SCOTT, Sonya Landis

SCOTT, Sonya Landis

SCOTT, Sonya Landis

passed on October 19, 2018 at the age of 91. She was born on May 25, 1927 in Topeka, Kansas, the sixth of seven children and the fourth of five daughters. Her parents, John F. Landis and Alta Colter, instilled Sonya with a loving heart, strength of character, courage and a fierce sense of family loyaltytraits that served her well throughout her life. Sonya was raised in Topeka and St. George, Kansas before the family relocated to Luddington and then Midland, Michigan where she graduated from High School. It was in Midland that she met the love of her life, Harrison Scott, where they were married on June 14, 1958. Together, they lovingly raised two children as they moved from Midland to Camden, South Carolina and then Baltimore, Maryland. They later lived in Cincinnati, Ohio before following their children West, retiring to Tucson in 1995. Family, faith, sports and music were Sonya's greatest loves. A star basketball player in her youth, she took great joy in avidly following college basketball, especially the Kansas Jayhawks and Arizona Wildcats. A talented singer and dancer, she joyfully performed in numerous musical groups, school operettas, weddings and church choirs. Always quick with a laugh and a warm smile, Sonya could out talk anyone and easily made friends wherever she went, while cherishing friendships made through every stage of her long life. A career woman in an era when that was not the norm, Sonya attended Western Michigan and Central Michigan universities before being sidelined by polio and a two-year recovery in the hospital and rehab. Sonya was a wonderful example of how to live. How to persevere, love unconditionally and find happiness and laughter in every day. Her independent spirit and the pure joy in which she lived shone through in all she did for her family, friends and church community. Sonya was predeceased by her beloved Harrison by five weeks. She is survived by their two children, Laura Scott (Steve Kimura) of Los Angeles and David Scott of Tucson; their two cherished granddaughters, Erin Scott of Tucson and Paloma Kimura of Los Angeles; her sister, Freda Sommers of Fremont, Michigan; two sisters-in-law, and a multitude of much-loved nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her other siblings, Adiel Landis, Mercedes Ross, Cayley Landis, Rose Steinke, Nanine Noneman, and brothers- and sisters-in-law. A Memorial Celebration was held for Sonya and Harrison together on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. in the prayer garden of Northminster Presbyterian Church. Memorial donations may be made in Sonya and Harrison's name to The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson.
