POWERS, Zola Lyerly

POWERS, Zola Lyerly

POWERS, Zola Lyerly

One of God's human masterpieces, Zola Lyerly Powers, departed her native Tucson for Heaven on October 1, 2018. She was born on December 16, 1931 at the Stork's Nest. She spent her early years on her family's 640 acre homestead, which is now Tanque Verde. She attended the Tanque Verde Country School and later Tucson High School (Class of 1950, Alpha Epsilon) and Woodbury University in Los Angeles where she studied fashion and interior design. In 1952 Zola designed her own wedding dress for her marriage to Lawrence "Larry" Christopher Powers. Zola taught young Tucsonan's how to design and sew their own clothes while managing the fabric department at Jacome's Department Store in the early 1950's. Throughout her life, Zola designed casual and formal wear for herself, her children and her grandchildren. Zola and Larry also designed and built their own homes in Nogales and Tucson, and Zola's impeccable taste for interior design made each one a showcase. After Zola was married, the couple lived in Atascadero, California, where Larry was stationed while serving in the Army. They returned to Tucson to start their family and in 1963, they moved to Nogales, Arizona where Larry managed one of his family's stores, O'Malley Building Materials. Zola immediately became active in the Nogales community including volunteering at her children's schools, the American Heart Fund, 4-H, American Business Women's Association, Realtor Association, Pimeria Art Gallery, Girl Scouts, Garden Club and more. She made many dear, lifelong friends in Tucson and Nogales. Zola and Larry made lasting memories with family and friends at their cabin on Mt Lemmon and later at their cabin in Lakeside. Zola took her most important jobs very seriously: she was an outstanding wife and an always present, compassionate, generous with attention and love to her four children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Larry; her children, Patti Zermeño (Gilbert), Nikki Dodier (Vic), Chris Powers (Terri) and Helen (Dede) Powers; her sisters, Nina McCarville and Sara Humphrys, and her sister-in-law, Mary Helen Powers. Her beloved grandchildren, Wilson, Seth, Zola, Delaney, Makinley, Tate, Ashley, Tracy, Steven, Erik, Jeffrey and Michael and great-granddaughter, Zola and her mother, Killian. A celebration of Zola's life will be held on December 16, 2018 at a location to be announced later. Arrangements by OASIS CREMATION & BURIAL.
