Nancy Addie

Nancy Addie

Nancy passed away peacefully at home the evening of January 1, 2023, with her loving husband Dan Gipple by her side. She was born in Chicago on April 7, 1953 to Raymond and Dorothy Yvoskis.  The family moved to Phoenix in 1956.  She graduated from West High School in 1971. Nancy struck out on her own early, entered Arizona State University and graduated with a degree in Medical Technology.  She worked at Mesa Lutheran for a number of years. She then moved to Tucson where she began a new career as a Quality Control Specialist at local company that produced medical information technology systems.  Nancy worked at several different medical IT companies, earning her way up to Senior QC Specialist and then director of the QC department. Nancy was very well respected by her colleagues, who often sought her out for help and advice on difficult issues. Nancy and I met in 1991 and quickly found that we were meant to be together.  We loved the outdoors and for decades spent many vacations camping, hiking, and 4-Wheeling throughout the West.  We usually found out-of-the-way places where we enjoyed the peace, solitude and beauty of nature. Two of our favorite non-camping places were the Grand Canyon and the Cayman Islands, where one of my brothers' lives.  We went to the both places many times.  Once we hiked down to Phantom ranch and back.  Other times, we hiked the rim or found a quiet spot overlooking the Canyon. In the Caymans, Nancy enjoyed snorkeling far from shore to see the vibrant coral colors, a variety of fish species, including barracudas, sting rays and sharks, and then relaxing on "island time." Nancy was an adventuresome person, eager and unafraid to take on new challenges.  She earned her pilot's license, learned to rock climb and was an excellent 4-Wheeler. One of her favorite pastimes was crocheting. Nancy spent hours creating intricate designs of all kinds and then gave them away to family and friends. Nancy was full of life and joy, with an easy laugh and big smile. She was truly a joy to be with. While she came from a small family, she became part much larger family when we married.  The new family quickly came to love her. Nancy has one son, Jason.  She was very proud and happy to see him grow into the man, husband and father that he is today. Jason may have inherited Nancy's sense of adventure.  He's traveled to various countries around the world and currently lives in the Republic of Georgia with his family.  One of Nancy's favorite enjoyments was Facetiming with Jason, his wife Tamuna and, of course, watching grandsons Alexander and Michael grow. During her fight with several medical conditions, Nancy displayed her usual tenaciousness, strength and dignity.  She was fortunate to have excellent medical care. We would like to especially thank Dr. James Knepler and his team, Amy and Marie of Banner Cancer Center and PA Linda Moors of Arizona Blood and Cancer. They were always there for Nancy. Nancy will be missed dearly, but we have all been very fortunate to have had her as part of our lives.

Marlan Askren

Marlan Askren

Marlan Leon ("M.L.") Askren, affectionately known by many as simply "Sonny," passed away in Tucson, at just 88 years old, October 16, 2022. A fine age, but as Sonny would tell you, he was only just getting going. Born in Atchison, KS in August 1934, he carried his proud small town Americana roots with him everywhere he went. From growing up in Kansas, to attending University of Arizona, graduate school in Washington DC, on to a career with Monsanto that began in St. Louis, MO and took him and his family to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil and all the way back to the States again. He started and advised several independent local businesses in Tucson before jumping into his own real estate practice for nearly 25 years. Devoted son to Marietta, brother to Jody (Anderson) and Paul (Askren), uncle, father, grandpa, and friend to practically anyone he met. "Kindness. Honesty. Hard work," were his guiding values and he exemplified them every day. Julia Holtry

Julia Holtry

Julie was born April 13, 1947 in Tucson Arizona to Robert William Berne and Blossom Chernin Berne Dorff. Her childhood years were mostly spent in Tucson with one year in Cleveland Ohio, her father's hometown. In 1956 the family moved to Southern California. Julie graduated from Venice High School (Prominently featured in the movie Grease) Julie received her undergraduate degree from University of Arizona in Tucson. After college, Julie was working for the airline TWA and was living at Marina Del Rey in Southern California where she met her future husband - Frank Holtry.  They married in 1972 and had 42 years together traveling the world. Julie left TWA to work for Hughes Air West. She became Inflight Services Director, the highest executive level position held by a woman in the company. Julie always had a keen business sense and she got her MBA from Pepperdine University.  She spent time working at Hewlett Packard and Atari in their early days. Julie and Frank had adventures, friendships and homes all across the country.  In the 70's they had beautiful properties in Manhattan Beach, Redwood City and Lake Tahoe Area. They experienced and survived major earthquakes in both Southern California and the Bay Area.  In the 80's they spent over a year crisscrossing the country with their travel trailer. They ended up buying property in the Florida Keys (They waited for the new 7 mile bridge to open so they wouldn't have to pull their trailer across the very narrow (and scary) old 7 mile bridge.) In the Keys they had a new home installed on their property.  Julie, always seeing business opportunities, thought she could do the job better herself, so, she started her own company Sunhaven Homes of the Keys and went on to install over 200 homes in the Lower and Middle Keys.  Julie and Frank had many great adventures out on the water in the keys fishing, diving and lobstering.  One year Julie was even the Queen of the Shrimp Boat Parade.  They were in the Keys for over 20 years and experienced and survived hurricanes Andrew and Georges (which created a lot of opportunities for rebuilding) along with many other less severe storms. In the 2000's Julie and Frank had homes in Vernal, Utah and Oro Valley, Arizona, where Julie started her own business making and selling jewelry.  She also worked at The Golden Goose Thrift Shop which she enjoyed very much, especially because this allowed her to get first crack at all of the incoming merchandise. Everywhere she went Julie made fast friends and was a gracious host for many gatherings and events. Julie will be remembered fondly and missed by many. Julie passed away on Dec. 17, 2022 after battling pancreatic cancer.  Julie's final weeks were spent at the home of her stepson Tom Holtry and his wife Barbara.  They provided warm and loving care for Julie and were by her side at the very end. Julie is survived by her older brother and sister-in-law Michael and Jeanene Berne, younger brother and sister-in-law Michael and Shari Dorff, stepsister and brother-in-law Ilona and Jeff Honeyman Bickel, stepbrother and sister-in-law Ron and Carol Herman,  stepson and daughter-in-law Tom and Barbara Holtry, stepson Rob Holtry, a step-granddaughter and 3 step-grandsons, 4 step-great-grandchildren with one more scheduled to arrive soon, along with many cousins, nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held on March 10, 2023 in Oro Valley, Arizona.  For information regarding date and location of a memorial service in the Florida Keys please email: robholtry@gmail.com

Shirley Mcreynolds

Shirley Mcreynolds

So, My Sweet Shirley: a number of years ago I asked you to write your own obituary so I would have the facts if you predeceased me. You wrote that you were born in Berwyn, Illinois in 1937 to Marguerite and Vernon McReynolds. Nine years later your brother, Gary, was born and soon after the family moved to Tucson. You had a 30 year career at Hughes Aircraft (Raytheon); then after you retired once, you became employed at Microsoft Information Systems. Those were the facts. Oh, but you were so much more! You loved the outdoors, whether gardening with Community Gardens of Tucson (family and friends enjoyed the fruits of your passion regularly) or hiking the mountain trails of southern Arizona with friends. We enjoyed eating Mexican food once a week, family holiday celebrations, "date days" every Friday for lunch and a movie. You and I explored the beauty of many areas of the United States in our RV, the wonder of Europe and Canada on guided tours, and sailing the high seas on several cruises. We also were blessed to leave the sizzling summer Tucson heat for relief in the White Mountains for five summers. Despite these activities, Shirley and I agreed that the greatest achievement was finally getting legally married in San Diego in 2013, with Betty and Hershel as witnesses and loving honor attendants. Dear Shirley, your traits of character that sustained others and me throughout the years included intelligence, humility, compassion for others, honesty, and especially, love. Although shy at times, you were friendly to all. I loved your playfulness and wicked and subtle sense of humor (right up to the end). You are my rock, and will never be forgotten my me and others who knew you. For too many years, Shirley battled the devastation of dementia, trying to adjust to the changes in her brain. Then abdominal cancer returned recently, creating a terminal crisis. Your amazing courage was honored by all, until you finally closed your eyes and found peace. So, Sweet Shirley, rest until I meet you again down the road. Special thanks to those who understood and comforted us on this journey: Alzheimer's Association; Bayada at The Fountains of La Cholla; Copper Canyon Memory Care; Traditions Hospice; and all of our loving, giving friends. Shirley is survived by her friend of over 55 years and wife of 30, Peg Mittendorf; in-laws Betty and Hershel Craig, who were always there; and her brother and nephew, Gary and Jessie McReynolds. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE HEATHER.

Mary Mulcahy

Mary Mulcahy 93, beloved friend, sister and aunt died December 31, 2022. Mary is survived by her sister Fran Mowen of Kearny, NJ. 13 nieces/nephews and a great- niece. We remember Mary as an outgoing, dog loving, multifaceted diamond who continues to enrich our lives. Arriving with her husband Danny in 1972 Mary easily made Tucson her home. Working as a sought-after court recorder by many judges in Pima County Mary enlived any and every gathering she attended. She took comfort in Alanon and her strong faith in the power of prayer. Mary's good will may live on through each of us. To celebrate Mary, wear purple, to the gathering at Adair Funeral Home,1050 North Dodge Blvd., Thursday, January 19th at 11:00 a.m. Flowers may be sent to Adair. Donation to Humane Society of Tucson or PACC of Pima County.

Kathryn Rotchstein

Kathryn Rotchstein

Kathryn grew up in Tucson, AZ, born to Laurence and Alice D. Rotchstein. She graduated from Santa Rita High School where she was very active in: Show Choir, worked on the school newspaper, was inducted into the National Honor Society, and debate team. She graduated from Pima College with an associate degree towards Education and was a part of the women's golf team. Katie attended U of A and majored in Education. Kathryn ran the after-school program at her church for K-3 grades where she met her BFF, Amber Powell. She started working part-time at Home Depot. When they asked her, due to her integrity and work ethic, to train in their management program, she accepted. She became an assistant manager at the East Broadway store. After being diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in 2013, she continued working there throughout her cancer treatment. She began looking for a less stressful job and found Trader Joe's and worked as an assistant manager "Mate" at the Campbell Ave T.J.'s. She found it a pleasure to work for T.J.'s. While visiting family in Eugene in 2017, Katie decided to visit three area T.J.'s stores so the managers would have a face to put with the name. The Corvallis store had an opening, and, in a month, she had moved to Eugene and worked for Lance, the Captain of the Corvallis store. Soon, she was transferred to the Eugene store with Miguel as the Captain. Kathryn had the utmost integrity in her work ethic. Unfortunately, towards the end of 2021, she no longer could work. The cancer had metastasized to her bones. I would like to thank with love and gratitude, Ana and Ian Rubin, who took care of her and with her nurse's training and compassion, helped her both physically and emotionally. Katie felt so close to them and their son. Each one considered the other family. Over the years, Katie supplemented her income with various entrepreneurships, selling Premiere Jewelry, LuLaRoe clothing, and her favorite was pet-sitting through the Rover app. I would like to thank Peace Health Hospice and Valley West Nursing Facility for their kind and gentle care. Kathryn, you will be loved forever. Per her request, there will be no service.
