His long career included work in industry, academia and as a consultant, including a 22-year affiliation with Nucor Corporation. Richard Burns

Richard Burns

BURNS, Maj Richard Stephen,

USAF, (Ret.),

September 20, 1936 - November 26, 2021

Richard Stephen Burns, MSNE, MBA, 85, passed away November 26, 2021, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Richard was born September 20, 1936, in Newark, New Jersey to Louis John and Margaret (Finnegan) Burns. He spent his early years in Nutley, NJ. In 1940 his family moved to Washington, DC. Growing up he attended Catholic schools: Nativity Grammar School; St. John's College High School (Class of 1955); and The Catholic University of America with a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering (BAE Class of 1959). Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an officer and began his 21-year career with the Air Force.

During his service with the Air Force, he obtained both a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering (MSNE) and an MBA. Notable assignments included his work as a technical director at the Air Force Weapons Laboratory where in the late 1960's, at the height of the Cold War, he oversaw underground nuclear testing in Nevada. He also served for five years in the National Military Command Center at the Pentagon performing nuclear weapon studies for military planning. He would later recall watching from his Pentagon window as Arlington National Cemetery expanded during the Viet Nam Conflict. His last years of service were at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as a project officer, during which time the engineering team he was a part of developed the depleted-uranium bullet, which is used to this day, in the A-10 ground attack aircraft. He retired from the Air Force in 1980. During his Air Force career, he received numerous awards and decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Following Richard's retirement from the Air Force, he moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where he worked for seventeen years at the Oak Ridge National Lab and Martin Marietta Energy Systems. During those years he worked as a project manager within various programs including the gas centrifuge program, hazardous waste cleanup, and safety analysis engineering. He retired in 1997.

In 1964 Richard married the love of his life Margaret Louise Devany, beginning a partnership that would last 44 years until her death in 2008. Theirs was a chance meeting when Richard was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base Radar School and Margaret came to visit her sister who was married to a good friend of Richard's. They always delighted at the extraordinary circumstances of an Air Force officer from Washington, DC, meeting a nurse from New York City in Biloxi, Mississippi. Together they raised two sons, managed many Air Force moves, enjoyed traveling together, and strove to put their Catholic faith into action.

Richard's Catholic faith was central to his life; he was an engaged Catholic who supported many Church and community projects throughout his life. From 1974 to 1980, while members of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Dayton, Ohio, he and his wife were active volunteers with Dismas House, a project for formerly institutionalized mentally ill adults.

In 1985, Richard marshaled a team of volunteers and coordinated with a dozen local churches to establish the Ulster Project of Oak Ridge, later expanding to become the East Tennessee Ulster Project. Under Richard's leadership and the direction of Canon Kerry Waterstone of the Church of Ireland, the Project hosted groups of teens, half Catholic and half Protestant, from Northern Ireland for a month's stay in Oak Ridge. Today, 35 years later, the annual visits continue to foster positive relationships, communication skills, and social engagement that enhances these young lives and their Irish communities.

Following retirement, Richard and Margaret relocated to Tucson, Arizona where they continued their volunteer service. Richard and his wife worked to bring Café Justo (the Just Coffee Project) to St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church. This project supports a sustainable cooperative of rural coffee farmers in Chiapas, Mexico.

Richard was also a pro-life proponent and devoted significant time and energy to many organizations including volunteering at Reachout Women's Center in Tucson. Among other efforts, he founded a program that supported men who were partners of women with an unplanned pregnancy.

Throughout his life, Richard loved singing and was a regular choir member both at church and in the communities he lived in. The pinnacle of his love of singing occurred in 2017 when, through the University of Arizona Community Chorus, he sang at New York's Carnegie Hall.

Richard loved to stay active and travel. He was widely known as an avid bicycle commuter wherever he worked. He expressed his excitement of riding a bicycle in New York City traffic as much as he enjoyed rural roads and trails. After his wife passed, he took long bike tours throughout the USA, Europe, and Japan. He also biked and walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain multiple times and enjoyed inspiring others to do the same. In 1979, he completed a life goal by running in the Boston Marathon.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Louise Devany Burns; infant daughter, Stephanie Marie Burns (1965); brother, Louis John Burns Jr.; sister, Paula Sue (Burns) Barnes and parents, Louis and Margaret Burns. He is survived by his sons, LTC Christopher J. Burns (USA, Ret), (Dawn Catherine Burns) and Kevin Devany Burns MD; grandchildren, Megan Elizabeth, Sarah Anne, and Nicholas Andrew; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be on Friday, December 17, 2021, 12:30 p.m. Visitation, 1:30 p.m., Rosary, 2:00 p.m. Funeral Mass followed by Reception at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 4925 N. James Glanz

James Glanz

GLANZ, James Courtney

1952 - 2021

James Glanz, "Jim," sadly, passed away from Covid-19 on December 1, 2021, at St Joseph's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona, after giving the coronavirus a really good fight. He was born on May 26, 1952, in Crookston, Minnesota. He is preceded in death by his father, Edward J. Glanz and his mother, Lois A. Huffman. Jim's early childhood was on a farm in Crookston prior to his family moving to Tucson, where his father was stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB. Jim attended school in Tucson and graduated from Rincon High School where he played football. After graduation he enlisted in the Army and served his country proudly as an Operating Room Technician.

Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Jim returned to Tucson and started a carpet cleaning business. He was in the carpet cleaning business for four decades. His business known as "Famous Carpet Cleaning," will still be operating moving forward as this is what Jim would have wanted. He loved serving customers all over Tucson and the Southern Arizona area. Jim was known for being extremely responsive and doing an amazing five-star job.

Jim was very humble, giving, and generous. He touched many people and lifted them up with his gifts. His Facebook page read, "No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted." (Aesop) It is our pledge here at Famous Carpet Cleaning to make what changes we are able to make now and let the 'giving spirit' spread, infinitely touching the lives of people we may never meet, across boundaries we may never cross and in ways we may never imagine. That is the power of giving and our ticket to changing the world.

Jim loved his family and friends and he spent as much time as he could with them. It was very common to see Jim out and about at El Molinito with his beloved wife, Christine, and his beautiful daughters, Courtney and Missy. He had a very quick wit and a lot of charm. Jim also had a very competitive nature, a love of golf and football, and an incredible work ethic. As his sister Nancy said, "he gave us a lifetime of laughter and kindness to remember him and a reason to miss him so much."

Jim was always ready to pitch in and help. He volunteered at Angels on the Border and an untold number of hours teaching others and helping them start their own businesses as well as anything else he could do to help them, anyone, anytime.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Christine Glanz (Computers Etc); son, James Ferguson and his wife, Kate (Las Vegas); daughters, Courtney Glanz and Melissa Glanz (Tucson); stepson and stepdaughter, Alan Bayze and Kimberly Bayze (Tucson); brother, Ed Glanz and his wife, Kitty (St. David); sisters, Nancy Glanz (Tucson) and Ruth Weaver and her husband, Bob (Las Vegas). Jim is also survived by four grandchildren.

A memorial plaque will be made and hung at Fred Enke Golf Course in honor of Jim and his love for golf. We will be having a celebration of life event on Saturday, January 15, 2022, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at El Molinito Restaurant on Pantano and Wrightstown. Please RSVP to Christine Glanz at cgjasmine@yahoo.com.

Rudy Robles

Rudy Robles

ROBLES, Rudy R.

passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loved ones on December 5, 2021 at the grand age of 78. Rudy was a mentor to many, teacher to several and friend to all. Born on September 1, 1943 in Tucson, Arizona. A graduate from Pueblo High School, class of 1961. After graduation, Rudy went on to start a long successful career with Union Pacific (PFE). This led him to the Bakersfield/Fresno area of California where he spent a short period of time. He then decided home is where his heart is and made his way back to Tucson to his family, creating a lifetime of beautiful memories. He loved his sports, especially the Cleveland Browns and Indians and never missed an opportunity to cheer on his grandchildren at sporting events. He always made sure to let out a honk from his truck to let them know "Tata Rudy" was there. He had a great sense of humor and the finest jokes in the book. He took pride in his gardening and cooking from scratch. He had the greenest grass on the block, loved that "chiltepin" plant and made the best homemade barbecue sauce in town. Rudy was a man who set a lasting impression on everyone he came across and brought life to every room he entered. The nicknames he gave his family and friends will continue to live on forever. He will be greatly missed. Preceded in death by his mother, Enedina; brothers, Ruben, Raymond, Walter and first wife, Alice. Louise Splane

Louise Splane

SPLANE, Louise Peel

3/8/1917 - 11/13/2021

Louise "Lele" Splane had her final wish granted when she died in her sleep in the early morning hours of November 13, 2021. She was 104. Born in Tucson to Edward and Josephine Peel, Lele and her sister, Jane, grew up in the West University neighborhood and attended Roskrudge, Tucson High and the University of Arizona. While at the UofA Lele met Jack Splane, a transfer student from UCLA. They married just as the United States entered into WWII and were soon separated when Jack enlisted in the US Army Engineers. Their first daughter, Suzie, was born while Jack was overseas.

After the war, Jack returned to the UofA and graduated with a degree in mining engineering. Shortly after their second daughter, Sally, was born, Jack moved the family to a small graphite mining town in Sonora, Mexico. They were the only English-speaking family in the village. Lele perfected her high school Spanish and coped with the graphite dust that covered her children and home. The couple's son, John was born during their last year there. After five years, the family moved to another mining town, San Francisco del Oro, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico where they lived for over a year. Lele enjoyed the international community and social life there. In 1955 the family moved back to Tucson where Jack opened up a mining engineering consulting business. They built a house on Tucson's east side where Lele lived for 65 years.

Lele, our mom, was a wonderful wife and mother. She let us be kids, didn't schedule us for lots of activities, and was always there for us. She survived personal losses and lived in places that called on her to make the best of it, always with a good outlook on life. Our dad died in 1984 and Mom lived in their home until recently, when she moved in with Suzie. She loved her home, working in her yard and entertaining. She traveled wherever her daughters and son took her. She especially enjoyed her summer weeks in Solana beach and her Christmases at home. She was a life-long bridge player and enjoyed her many bridge groups, especially the "Final Four" with Betty Yeager, Marilyn Norris, Susan Herman and Marilyn Pottinger.

Lele was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Jo Peel; her husband, Jack; her sister, Jane Kelly and almost all of her friends. She is survived by her children, Suzie Hawkins, Sally DeYoung (Dirk), and John. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Justin (Annie), Lindsay (Andy) and Michael (Hope) and great-grandchildren, Josephine and Zoey. Lele had a special relationship with her nieces and nephews and their children; the Splanes and Healys of California, and the Kellys of Tucson. A celebration of Lele Splane's life will be held in March. Arrangements by AVENIDAS CREMATION AND BURIAL.
