Kathleen Deal

Kathleen Deal

Deal, Kathleen "Kathy" Pollina

Beloved wife of Graham Wheatland, mother, sister, grandmother and friend passed away March 5, 2022, will be greatly missed by many. The first born to Andy and Lucy Pollina in Monongahela, PA, Kathy would be the first to tell you that the first born is the smartest. After moving from town to town while Andy worked at various power plants, it seemed a new sister was added at each stop until ultimately settling in Tucson, Arizona in the late 50's. After graduation from the University of Arizona, Kathy spent most of her professional career as an elementary school teacher with a particular love of math. Kathy would tell you her greatest contribution to the world was her three children. All three would agree that Kathy was their greatest cheerleader. Regardless of her physical struggles, she always found the positive "light" to guide those she loved and herself. A celebration of life will be held on March 20, 2022 at Rancho Del Lago Clubhouse, 10264 S. Peter Fasseas

Peter Fasseas

FASSEAS, Peter A.

Peter A. Fasseas community banker and small business advocate, passed peacefully February 24, 2022, in his Laguna Beach winter home after a valiant, 15-year battle with cancer. A family man above all else, he was surrounded by loved ones.

Born June 10, 1939 in Chicago, Peter's formative years during the post-war era led him to attend Culver Military Academy for high school, where he learned the value of discipline and perseverance. In addition to serving in US Army Intelligence, he went on to Northwestern University for undergraduate and law school and was a lifelong Wildcat and Cubs fan.

As an attorney, he represented many hard-working small business entrepreneurs and grew frustrated by how difficult it was for them to obtain bank loans. In 1978, he and his wife, Paula, gathered a group of investors and purchased North Community Bank, a one-office bank near Wrigley Field. He began by making all the loans himself at a time when Illinois was a unit-bank state, which limited every financial institution to one location. Helping people obtain their version of the American Dream was his motivation, building small businesses and vitalizing communities. Under his leadership, Metropolitan Bank Group grew into the largest privately held bank group in Illinois, with 98 locations and 1,100 employees. In 2013, the company was recapitalized and turned into Byline Bank.

After his retirement, Peter continued serving the communities he loved through board and philanthropic service. He was a trustee and supporter of Culver Military Academy, the University of Arizona Foundation, the Hellenic Foundation, Chicago City Day School and PAWS Chicago, the organization his wife and daughter founded in 1997 that has grown into one of the largest No Kill animal welfare organizations in the nation.

Peter and Paula established the Fasseas Foundation, funding The University of Arizona Fasseas Cancer Center, supporting cancer research at Dana Farber and other leading medical universities, and providing resources to many other charities across the country.

Loved ones greatly miss his contagious smile, booming voice, unceasing positivity, passion for life (and the stock market), sound and steady counsel and grounding in the Midwestern values that he held true to throughout his life.

He is survived by Paula (Sfarnas) Fasseas, his wife of 46 years; his children, Alexis and Drew; daughter-in-law, Meghan; three grandchildren, Katherine Polyxeni, Alexandra Ione, and Olivia James; brother, Milton (Kathy) Fasseas; sister-in-law, Jeannie (David) Howell and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and Godchildren.

Wake and funeral services will be held at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Peter's honor to PAWS Chicago or cancer research. Arrangements by Evergreen Mortuary.

John Jaskoski

John Jaskoski

JASKOSKI, John Howard

John Jaskoski passed away peacefully February 11, 2022 at his apartment in Anchorage, Alaska.

Born August 29, 1951, in St Mary's Hospital, John was the fifth child and oldest son of James and Irene Jaskoski. Two younger brothers were born in the following 5 years.

John was always open to adventure. When he was 5 years old the family rented a vacation home and John decided to explore the new neighborhood; after a few hours he was brought home by police. He always enjoyed reminiscing about this classic childhood adventure.

While at St Ambrose grade school John initiated his first business venture, raising earthworms--a learning experience, as Tucson was not a suitable climate. Following graduation from Salpointe High School in 1969, John set out hitchhiking, eventually reaching Kodiak, Alaska. After a year working in Alaska fisheries he spent a summer hitchhiking through Europe, then returned to the U.S. and completed an academic term at Stanford University.

In the 1970's, John returned to Kodiak, where he met and married Navah Levy, and where their children, David Raven and Maiah, were born. Through the early 1980s the family lived on Kodiak, alternating between the home that John built in Monashka Bay, and Cape Ugat where he operated his thriving salmon fishing business.

The following years brought severe challenges: persistent health troubles, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, family conflicts, and the death of his son, David. Eventually, John established residence in Anchorage. He completed an AA degree at the University of Alaska/Anchorage, found support with a local Seventh Day Adventist church, and advocated for community and environmental groups--notably, lobbying the U.S. Commerce Department's North Pacific Fishery Management Council to encourage no-fuel fisheries.John is survived by his daughter, Maiah Jaskoski, son-in-law John Kaltenstein, and grandsons Samuel and Jacob, as well as sisters Helen, Elizabeth, and Margaret, and brother Philip. Donations in memory of John Jaskoski may be made to Friends of the Earth, 2150 Allston Way Ste 360, Berkeley, CA 94704.

Richard (Dick) McGann was Irish, born near Boston, cheered for the Red Sox and tolerated his New York Giants. He served as Chief Operations Officer and VP of Information Technology for several large corporations during his business career and was respected and valued by those who reported to him. A fair, principled man with a "get it done" approach, Dick started his own management consulting company in 1995 and worked with businesses both nationally and internationally. Mildred Olson

Mildred Olson

OLSON, Mildred Herreras

Mildred was an authentic, adventurous, strong, and caring mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. A world traveler and voracious reader, Millie also loved helping people, and spending time with friends and family laughing over good food and conversation. However, there were four things Millie was most proud of in this world: being a nurse, serving her country in the United States Air Force, and being a mother and grandmother.

She left us too soon on Friday, March 4, 2022 at age 86. A fourth-generation Tucsonan, Millie was born to Richard and Annie Herreras on March 9, 1935, the youngest of three daughters.

She graduated from Tucson High in 1953, where she played saxophone in the Tucson High marching band. Her senior year, Millie took an entrance exam to attend St. Mary's Nursing School and earned a full scholarship. Shortly after she graduated, she joined the U.S. Air Force in 1960. Nursing opened the world to her. After becoming a mother, she returned to school to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at Baylor University. From there, nursing opened the world to her and her daughter.

They created a rich life of adventure together living in Texas, Louisiana, the Panama Canal Zone in the Republic of Panama, and Germany. In the late '90s, Millie returned to Tucson to retire, reconnecting with high school and nursing school friends. She was also lucky to have another career in retirement doing diabetes education at St. Mary's, and cultivating an amazing group of friends in that department. Her faith community at Our Mother of Sorrows was also important to her, where she had a small circle of women friends dedicated to faith and service.

Retirement also allowed her to travel, spend more time creating stained glass projects, jewelry, and quilting blankets for friends and family; as well as volunteering at Casa de los Ninos, the Veterans Administration Hospital, and serving as a docent at Mission San Xavier del Bac, among others. She also helped care for her grandson, an important light in his elementary school years, wowing him with her delicious family dinners, and helping him navigate life and small adventures.

Millie is preceded in death by her mother and father, Richard and Annie Herreras; the love of her life, her husband James Olson; her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline and Ruben Valenzuela, and Ana Marie and James Hutchins, as well as her grandparents, Andres Herreras, Marie Hoffman, and Mary Tisnado Rinehart, and her great-grandmother, Anita Tisnado Haney.

She is survived by her daughter, Mari Herreras; grandson, Rafael Benjamin Herreras-Zinman; her loyal pooch, Willow, and adopted sister, Maria Valenzuela; as well as her beautiful nieces and nephews, and their families: Ann and Tim Abeln, Brittany and Matt Brown, Garrett Abeln, Jane Hutchins and Veltricia Anguilo, Jackie Gomez, Chantel Leon, Lance Leon, James Hutchins, and Richard and Consuleo Hutchins.

A Rosary will be said at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at Our Mother of Sorrows, 1800 S. Kolb Rd., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. and interment at Holy Hope Cemetery, 3555 N. Oracle Road, at 1:30 p.m.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Our Mother of Sorrows, Saint Vincent de Paul, 1800 S. Kolb Rd., Tucson, AZ 85710. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.
