Photos: Girl's service project one step toward becoming Eagle Scout

Ivanna Viloria Enciso, 14, an eighth-grader at Coronado-K-8 School, directed a service project at her brother's school on Saturday as one step toward becoming one of Pima County's first female Eagle Scouts in Boy Scouts of America.

"I came to the United States about two and a half years ago," Ivanna said. "The community at Painted Sky (Elementary School) was really welcoming and everything they did, talking and helping Enzo, my brother, and I by introducing us to society whether it was cartoons or food, all that stuff they overall helped in the transition. I really wanted to do something that was going to help them, that was going to leave my mark as a thank you, thank you for being there for me and all of us."

Susana Enciso said she is proud that her daughter will be one of the first girls in the formerly all-male Boys Scouts of America to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. She said Ivanna coordinated and organized the service project with little or no guidance from her parents. Ivanna launched a GoFundMe page to raise money, made phone orders, and gathered volunteers for the project, which included cleaning playgrounds, repainting curbs, building a handicapped- accessible ball pit, and redecorating the school campus.

Candidates for Eagle Scout must achieve rank of Life Scout, earn 21 merit badges, actively participate in and help lead in the local troop, and lead and complete a service project, among other requirements.
