SPRINGERVILLE — Fire officials are expecting the winds to lighten up in eastern Arizona Friday and that should help the firefighting effort in the White Mountains.
Fire spokesman Peter Frenzen tells KTVK-TV it will be a good chance for fire crews to continue building dozer line and conducting burnout operations to remove dead trees and brush from fueling the wildfire.
Frenzen says Greer is not out of the fire danger, but there is a massive effort under way to protect the remaining residences in the mountain community.
Fire officials reported Thursday that 22 homes burned in Greer and five were damaged.
The U.S. Forest Service says crews have contained 5 percent of the Wallow fire after charring 603 square miles.
