Humpback Whales' Songs Can Spread Across The Ocean
Humpback whales are not only one of the largest living animals in the world, but are also known for producing song-like sounds. The songs produced by the whales can last up to 30 minutes. Scientists don’t know why the marine animals produce songs; some oceanographers suspect the behavior may attract mates. Prior research has shown that songs vocalized by one pod are at times copied by a nearby pod. This indicated that humpback whale songs travel in short-distance proximity. Now, a new study suggests that these songs can travel long distances by being mimicked and carried by other whales. Specifically, this research showed that humpback whale song revolutions traverse across the Pacific Ocean. This discovery could confirm the complex communication systems used by humpback whales - and likely by other whale species.
