PHOENIX  — A former Arizona death row inmate whose conviction in the killing of her son was overturned has filed a lawsuit alleging that law enforcement officials violated her civil rights.
The lawsuit was filed Friday by Debra Milke in federal court against the city of Phoenix, Maricopa County and numerous individuals.
Its allegations include that she was denied a fair trial in the 1989 killing of her 4-year-old son and was a victim of malicious prosecution.
A federal appeals court threw out Milke's conviction, ruling in 2013 that prosecutors knew about a history of misconduct by a detective on the case but failed to disclose it. Prosecutors are appealing a state court's ruling that charges cannot be refiled.
City and county officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
