Scrambling to keep the coronavirus at bay, officials ordered a cruise ship with 3,500 people aboard to stay back from the California coast Thursday until passengers and crew can be tested, after a traveler from its previous voyage died of the disease and at least two others became infected. Airmen lowered test kits onto the 951-foot (290-meter) Grand Princess by rope as the vessel lay at anchor off Northern California, and authorities said the results would be available on Friday. Princess Cruise Lines said fewer than 100 people aboard had been identified for testing. (California National Guard via AP)

In this Tuesday, March 3, 2020 photo, homeless people crowd a sidewalk in downtown Salem, Ore., where they have set up a makeshift camp. Experts say that the homeless, who often have health and substance-abuse problems, are exposed to the elements and do not have easy access to hygiene, are more vulnerable to the coronavirus. Some cities are making provisions so the homeless who contract the virus have a place to recover without spreading the infection further. (AP Photo/Andrew Selsky)

People enjoy the good weather in a park in downtown Rome, Saturday, Mar. 7, 2020. Following the coronavirus outbreak Italy has asked people to maintain a one-meter (three-foot) distance from strangers in public, to refrain from unnecessary travel and to avoid gatherings. Schools are shut down through March 15 nationwide and remote working has been advocated. While museums, which had been closed in the north, reopened with the one-meter rule being enforced, cinemas and theaters remain closed in northern Italy. (AP Photo/Domenico Stinellis)
