Photos: Daredevil test pilot Chuck Yeager dies at 97
Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Charles “Chuck” Yeager, the World War II fighter pilot ace and quintessential test pilot who showed he had the “right stuff” when in 1947 he became the first person to fly faster than sound, had died. He was 97.

The modest daredevil Charles Yeager, from a small town in West Virginia, flew faster than sound can travel at more than 660 mph in 1947. "In an age of media-made heroes, he is the real deal," said a biographer. Tom Wolfe’s book “The Right Stuff” told of his pioneering exploits.
The 2020 graduating class of flight test pilots at the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School in California includes five women — a record number.
