Black history Advanced Placement class rejected in Florida catches on elsewhere
The Advanced Placement course on African American studies that has been rejected by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration is being tested at 60 schools around the country. At one of them, Baton Rouge Magnet High School in Louisiana, students say it provides a welcome shift in perspective from other courses. "I don't feel particularly indoctrinated," said 18-year-old Kahlila Bandele, who sat in on a lesson this week spanning topics from Afro-Caribbean migration to jazz. DeSantis, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2024, said he was blocking the course in Florida because it pushes a political agenda. On Wednesday the College Board, which oversees AP classes, released the official framework for the course, which it plans to expand to additional schools this year.
