The official number of drug overdose deaths in 2021 was 106,699, the CDC said. That's nearly 16% higher than nearly 92,000 OD deaths in 2020.
The number of U.S. overdose deaths from fentanyl has skyrocketed — exceeding all other accidental deaths, including car crashes and gun violence. In response, the federal government and some states are redoubling efforts to make medication-assisted treatment more accessible to the estimated 9.5 million people with an opioid use disorder.
