PHOENIX — A Florida physician has died after colliding with another parachutist during a skydiving practice jump south of Phoenix.
Police in Eloy said Dr. Joel Shugar, 49, died on Monday. Shugar was a noted ophthalmologist in Tallahassee specializing in Lasik surgery, lens implant and cataract surgery.
Eloy police spokeswoman Amanda Villescaz said Shugar was among a group practicing formation jumping when he collided with another skydiver about 100 feet above the landing zone.
He died about an hour after the accident at a nearby hospital.
