Yuma resident Jay Stokes celebrated his 50th birthday by jumping out of an airplane — 640 times.
The veteran sky diver did it to break his own world record of 534 jumps in a 24-hour period. There was no word when his new record might be confirmed by Guinness World Records.
"I feel a little bit tired but I think I'll be OK," the exhausted former Army Green Beret said Saturday at Greensburg Municipal Airport in Indiana after finishing his feat at 8 a.m.
He almost didn't reach his goal after injuring his left quadriceps muscle around the 200th jump, but "I worked it out," Stokes said.
The pace amounted to one jump every 2 minutes and 15 seconds.
Before each jump, the plane carrying Stokes would rise to just 2,100 feet, and after Stokes jumped, the pilot would nosedive and speed back to earth so it could pick him up again quickly.
