Animals rescued from flood-hit Kherson region
After the dam in southern Ukraine's Nova Kakhovka was blown up on Tuesday, entire neighborhoods of Kherson were left underwater, and thousands of animals became stranded as the areas were evacuated. In the Kherson neighbourhood of Island, household pets loitered around the roofs of homes submerged by floodwater, as rescuers arrived by motorboats. Dogs and cats isolated on the rubble of flooded homes have had to survive without food or family. Animal rescue volunteers from Kharkiv try to rescue them, while shelling is sporadically heard in the distance. More than 100 animals have been retrieved since the dam was ruptured.
