Mexican volcano inspires scientists 80 years later
Atop the crater of the Paricutin volcano, the ground is still hot and steam escapes from rocks. This was the first volcano to have its birth, 80 years ago, documented in real time by modern science. Paricutin’s birth and nine-year eruption were a cornerstone in the study of what are known as monogenetic volcanos - relatively small ones that erupt only once, according to scientists.
