A massive fire has engulfed the roof of Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral, collapsing its long spire and sending thick plumes of smoke high into the sky.

A catastrophic fire engulfed the upper reaches of Paris' soaring Notre Dame Cathedral Monday, threatening one of the greatest architectural treasures of the Western world.
Carpenters building a new timber frame for the fire-ravaged roof of Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral are using the same tools and techniques as their medieval predecessors.
On Friday, Notre Dame's rebirth from the devastating fire will hit a major milestone. It will begin the last year of repair work before the cathedral reopens its huge doors to the public on Dec. 8, 2024.
