2012 High School Football All-Stars

Meet Southern Arizona's top high school football players of 2012.

First-team offense

QB: Tyler Williams, Sr., Ironwood Ridge - Offensive player of the year

The dynamic senior rushed for more than 1,000 yards (1,354) and passed for more than 1,000 (1,143) in helping to lead the Nighthawks to the Division II state championship.

RB: Johnny Peña, Sr., Salpointe Catholic

The four-year varsity player put a stamp on an accomplished career this year by rushing for 1,526 yards and 25 touchdowns for the 12-2 Lancers. He likely will end up playing for an Ivy League school at the next level.

RB: Anthony Braunreiter, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

Braunreiter was solid all season but turned it on even more in the postseason, rushing for 700 yards and 12 touchdowns in four playoff games to help the Nighthawks win a state title.

RB: Dominique Drake, Jr., Sierra Vista Buena

The new kid on the block, Drake was special in his first season in Southern Arizona after transferring from Maryland, rushing for 2,109 yards and 29 touchdowns.

WR: Luke Holley, Sr., Cienega

Holley hauled in 55 catches for 874 yards and and seven touchdowns this season for the Bobcats and was also one of the best punters in the state, averaging 43 yards per kick.

WR: Sunthi Danh, Sr., Sabino

Danh did multiple things well for the Sabercats offense, including rushing for 512 yards and seven scores, but he was mainly used at WR, where he caught 35 passes for 614 yards and seven more touchdowns.

TE: Matt Bushman, Jr., Sabino

Out of the tight end position, Bushman was the only receiver in Southern Arizona to have more than 900 yards, and he added 10 touchdowns on 41 catches. He was also a force on defense.

OL: Andrew Mike, Jr., Sabino

One of the most heavily recruited offensive linemen in the state, the left tackle was a big reason the Sabercats offense rushed for more than 2,700 yards and passed for more than 1,600.

OL: Travis Fister, Sr., Salpointe Catholic

The SMU commit anchored the best offensive line in Southern Arizona. He was a dominant run blocker for RB Johnny Peña and gave QBs Andrew Cota and Cameron Denson plenty of time to throw.

OL: Antonio Rosales, Sr., Tucson

Rosales committed to San Diego State before the season and then had a stellar senior year for the 7-3 Badgers, helping them gain more than 3,000 yards of total offense on the season.

OL: Gordon Longville, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

Longville was a two-way standout on the line for the Nighthawks, and on offense, he was a pivotal piece at guard, showing impressive skills as a run blocker for Tyler Williams and Anthony Braunreiter.

OL: Garrett Kohnke, Sr., Sahuaro

At 6 feet 3 inches and 235 pounds, Kohnke was another big body on an already big Sahuaro O-line. He was the Cougars' most consistent blocker on a team that gained more than 300 yards a game.

ATHLETE: Cameron Denson, Jr., Salpointe Catholic

Maybe the most exciting player in Southern Arizona, Denson racked up more than 2,000 yards of total offense and rushed for 1,026 yards on just 69 carries (14.87 yards per carry) and 18 TDs.

K: Robert Griffith, Sr., Cienega

The senior was a serious weapon for the Bobcats' special teams, converting on eight field goal tries, 51 point-after attempts and registering 41 touchbacks on 73 kickoffs.

First-team defense

DL: Carlos Carroll, Sr., Salpointe Catholic

A true linebacker, Carroll, who will play at SMU with Travis Fister, often played stand-up defensive end and made his presence felt with 94 total tackles on the season along with nine sacks and four forced fumbles.

DL: Robert Coleman, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

Coleman was a two-way starter for the Nighthawks and was as active as any defensive lineman in Southern Arizona, both stuffing the run and getting to the quarterback for 4 1/2 sacks.

DL: Isaiah Stroder, Sr., Sierra Vista Buena

Stroder was a consistent presence on the defensive line for the Colts and at 6-4, 265, he was hard to miss, especially with his 14 tackles for loss, 56 total tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception.

DL: Edgar Teran, Sr., Nogales

Teran was the leader of the defensive line for the Apaches and managed to stand out, no matter who was Nogales' opponent, as evidenced by his 43 tackles, four sacks and two interceptions.

LB: Jake Casteel, Jr., Salpointe Catholic

In his first year at Salpointe, Casteel, the son of UA defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel, had 110 tackles, six sacks, five fumble recoveries and three interceptions and was everywhere for a potent Lancers defense.

LB: Taylor Powell, So., Salpointe Catholic

The leading tackler for the Lancers, Powell had a breakout sophomore season in which he had 117 tackles to lead his section and also added three forced fumbles and three sacks.

LB: Scott Simmons, Sr., Ironwood Ridge - Defensive player of the year

Simmons, who rarely came off the field for the Nighthawks, was the most critical piece for a stacked I-Ridge defense. He had nine sacks and an eye-popping six blocked punts on the season.

LB: Corbin Gouby, Jr., Mountain View

The junior led an athletic Mountain Lions defense in tackles with 80, including 12 in a playoff win over Cienega, and was the leader of a unit that improved drastically from 2011.

DB: John Robert Klass, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

Like several of his teammates, Klass saved his best game for the state championship, where he picked up 11 tackles to put the finishing touches on a stellar senior season that included 69 tackles.

DB: Jay Williams, Jr., Salpointe Catholic

A defensive playmaker if there ever was one, Williams may have been the most important piece of the Lancers defense and had four interceptions, returning two for TDs to go along with his 62 tackles.

DB: Matt Brindley, Sr., Sabino

The unquestioned leader of the Sabercats defense, Brindley led the team in tackles and had three defensive touchdowns, including a critical fumble recovery for a score in the opener against Cienega.

DB: Nick Colgate, Sr., Nogales

The senior picked off a Southern Arizona-best 11 passes from his safety spot this season and five times had two picks in a game to go along with his 78 tackles, 15 of which came in a first-round upset of Sabino.

ATHLETE: Jake Matthews, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

At 6-3, 205, Matthews was an imposing figure at linebacker for the Nighthawks and led the state champions in tackles with 94 and also had 7 1/2 sacks.

P: Tanner Fanning, Sr., Sahuarita

He wasn't needed much because the Mustangs had an electric offense, but when he did boot it away, Fanning averaged nearly 40 yards per punt and has an offer to play at Pima Community College.

Coach of the year

Matt Johnson, Ironwood Ridge

The obvious pick, Johnson led the program to its first-ever state championship and has been to at least the semis three straight seasons.

2011 High School Football All-Stars

Meet Southern Arizona's top high school football players of 2011.

First-Team Offense

QB: Dallas Brown, Sr., Sabino

The only big-school QB in Southern Arizona to rush for at least 1,000 yards (1,221) and pass for at least 1,000 (1,558), Brown kept his team in every game it played and led the Sabercats to the state semifinals.

RB: Mitch Fischer, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

Fischer was the workhorse for the Nighthawks offense, finishing his senior season with 249 carries for 2,143 yards, saving his best for the postseason, rushing for 782 yards in three playoff games. Co-Player of the Year

RB: Manny Vera, Sr., Cienega

A two-time Daily Star first-team selection, Vera finished with 2,017 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns, averaging more than 8 yards a carry, and added another 208 receiving yards for the 13-1 Bobcats.

WR: Edgar Poe, Sr., Cienega

Cienega's go-to man for a big play, Poe hauled in 12 touchdown catches including the game-winner against Ironwood Ridge in the state semifinals and added 764 yards on 42 catches in 14 games.

WR: Cameron Denson, So., Salpointe

One of the most dynamic athletes in Southern Arizona, Denson had 19 total touchdowns and caught TD passes in nine of 10 regular-season games to finish with 957 yards on 39 catches, averaging 25 yards per catch.

WR: Denzel Jones, Sr., Santa Rita

His team went 3-6, but Jones never took a break from making plays for the Eagles, catching nine passes for 109 yards against the area's best team, Cienega. The 6-3, 185-pound future college player led the team in TDs.

TE: Niko Kittrell, Sr., Sahuaro

The 6-3, 235-pound senior, a San Jose State commit, was a touchdown machine for the Cougars with a knack for making big plays all season long for a team that bounced back with a 7-4 record.

OL: C.J. Healey, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

The 6-2, 265-pound Healey was one of a handful of seniors that led a young Nighthawks team into the semifinals and paved the way for more than 3,700 team rushing yards on the season.

OL: Travis Fister, Jr., Salpointe

Fister, a 6-2, 265-pound tackle and Division I recruit, anchored a line that kept QB Andy Cota clean and opened up holes for RB Johnny Peña, a duo that combined to average 279.8 yards per game.

OL: Austin Andrade, Sr., Amphitheater

A second-team pick as a junior, Andrade was a bright spot for a Panthers team that struggled to a 3-7 record, opening up enough holes for the team to rush for 2,209 yards and 21 TDs on the season.

OL: Jake Laird, Sr., Sabino

The senior used his speed and athleticism to anchor a Sabino offensive line that helped lead the Sabercats to more than 400 yards of offense per game and 79 offensive touchdowns in 13 games.

OL: Tyson Otuafi, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

A transfer from Nevada, Otuafi came in and made an instant impact for Ironwood Ridge, using his big frame (6-1, 240) to start on both sides of the ball, playing linebacker on defense and tackle on the offensive line.

ATHLETE: Tyler Williams, Jr., Ironwood Ridge

A wide receiver as a sophomore, Williams made the move to QB as a junior and passed for 836 yards and rushed for 1,043, while accounting for 24 total TDs and leading his team to the semifinals.

K: Jason Cox, Sr., Cienega

The senior was a sure thing for Nemer Hassey's Bobcats, connecting on 67 extra points and eight field goals (half from 40 or more yards out), including a 49-yarder in a 31-24 win over Sahuaro.

FIRST-TEAM DEFENSE

DL: Davierre Cummins, Sr., Salpointe

The physically intimidating Cummins (6-2, 240) was a presence on the Lancers' defensive front and made plays from his defensive end spot, finishing the year with 36 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks.

DL: Kevin Thompson, Sr., Cienega

With 74 tackles and eight sacks playing defensive end, Thompson made things happen for the Bobcats defense and as importantly was coach Nemer Hassey's go-to guy for leadership on the defensive side.

DL: Garrett Barraza, Sr., Salpointe

The run-stuffer of the Lancers' defensive line, Barraza was coach Dennis Bene's man in the middle. Despite constantly drawing double-teams, he still made plays when needed with 34 tackles.

DL: Liam White, Sr., Sabino

White, a 6-3, 240-pound lineman was a force on the Sabercats' defensive line, picking up a season-high 10 tackles in a win over Palo Verde and helping his team pitch six shutouts on the season.

LB: Cedric Gonzalez, Sr., Sunnyside

The heart and soul of the Blue Devils, Gonzalez did a little bit of everything for first-year coach Glenn Posey, registering 90-plus tackles, blocking a couple punts and kicks and scooping up three fumbles.

LB: Jeremy Timpf, Sr., Sabino

The senior responded well after his junior season was cut short due to injury and was in the middle of a lot of plays for the Sabercats, able to come up and stop the run and also capable of dropping into coverage.

LB: Blake Martinez, Sr., Canyon del Oro

The best defensive player in Southern Arizona, the Stanford commit was a man among boys during his senior season, compiling 118 tackles in 11 games along with 7 1/2 sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions. Co-Player of the Year

LB: Daniel Gonzales, Sr., Cienega

A two-way starter for the state runner-up, Gonzales led the way for the Cienega defense with an eye-popping 139 tackles. He also added six sacks for a unit that caused at least one turnover in all but one game.

DB: Jalen Rogers, Sr., Cienega

The dependable senior safety was the picture of consistency for the Bobcats during his final season, starting all 14 contests and having multiple-tackle games in each matchup, finishing with 92 total stops.

DB: Matt Brindley, Jr., Sabino

The leading tackler for perhaps the best defense in Southern Arizona, Brindley had 10 tackles and two interceptions against Cienega in the season opener and also had 13 tackles against Sunnyside.

DB: Jake Matthews, Jr., Ironwood Ridge

Matthews, who is bigger than most defensive backs at 6-3 and 195, was a physical presence for the Nighthawks defense and combined his safety speed with his linebacker size to make plays for a 10-3 I-Ridge team.

DB: D'Andre Williams, Sr., Tucson

The dynamic two-way starter rushed for 888 yards and 12 TDs on offense, but was an even bigger factor in the defensive backfield, compiling 91 tackles and three interceptions in the Badgers' bounce-back season.

ATHLETE: Carlos Carroll, Jr., Salpointe

The Lancers' leading tackler (62 stops), the linebacker was a playmaker adding five sacks and three interceptions on top of his tackle total and was missed when he sat out the team's playoff game with an injury.

P: Gaven DeFilippo, Jr., Amphitheater

The team's starting QB, DeFilippo accounted for 18 total TDs, but was also a standout with his leg, averaging more than 37 yards a punt with a long of 67 yards in the team's season opener against Palo Verde.

Coach of the year

Nemer Hassey, Cienega

The veteran coach led the Bobcats to a 13-1 record and a spot in the state championship game and has posted a 35-5 mark over the past three seasons.

SECOND-TEAM OFFENSE

QB: Michael Archie, Sr., Cienega

RB: Brian McCarty, Jr., Nogales

RB: Johnny Peña, Jr., Salpointe Catholic

WR: Aric Howard, Jr., Sahuarita

WR: Steven Corral, Sr., Sunnyside

FIRST-TEAM OFFENSE

QB: Tyler D'Amore, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

The three-year starter and clear team leader led his team to the state semifinals and threw for 2,842 yards and 32 touchdowns to lead Southern Arizona.

RB: Ka'Deem Carey, Sr., Canyon del Oro

The heart and soul of the Dorados, Carey put up eye-popping numbers (1,777 yards and 26 rushing touchdowns) despite missing three games. (Offensive Player of the Year)

RB: Manny Amore, Jr., Sunnyside

The tough runner grabbed Southern Arizona's attention when he ran for 409 yards against Nogales in Week 2. He finished the season with 1,908 yards.

WR: Trevor Wesley, Sr., Ironwood Ridge

D'Amore's favorite target, the two-way starter made play after play for the Nighthawks and ended the year with 72 catches for 1,157 yards and 16 touchdowns.

WR: Joseph Matthews, Sr., Rincon/ University

The New Mexico State commit was a playmaker all year for the Rangers and his physical style allowed him to catch 49 passes for 832 yards and 11 TDs.

WR: Shawn Kobylinski, Sr., Catalina Foothills

Kobylinski, who did a little bit of everything for the Falcons, was also QB Alyn Fletcher's favorite target, grabbing 33 catches for 607 yards.

TE: Ben Sullivan, Sr., Salpointe Catholic

Sullivan led Southern Arizona tight ends with 668 receiving yards and also caught touchdowns in four straight games for the Lancers.

OL: Jacob Arzouman, Sr., Salpointe Catholic

The 6-foot-4-inch, 270-pound right tackle was the leader of the offensive line and will take his game to the UA next season.

OL: Jesse Caldwell, Sr., Canyon del Oro

At 6 feet 4 inches and 262 pounds, the center paved the way for Ka'Deem Carey and Co., the past two years, showing above-average speed.

OL: Wes Clausen, Sr., Sabino

A standout on the offensive and defensive lines, Clausen was a big reason why the Sabercats rushed for 2,917 yards and 50 touchdowns.

OL: Crispin Chavira, Sr., Amphitheater

The Panthers could play their style of game, power football, because of the senior leader Chavira and his linemates up front, paving the way.

OL: Luis Parra, Sr., Catalina Foothills

The biggest Falcon offensive lineman, Parra (6 feet 4 inches, 245 pounds) was a big reason for his team's offensive success and first playoff win in program history.

All-purpose: Willie Willis, Sr., Cienega

The explosive playmaker made good things happen anytime he touched the ball, evidenced by his 25 all-around touchdowns and 1,827 rushing yards.

K: Tilghman Harvey, Sr., Canyon del Oro

It never seemed as if the Dorados were out of scoring distance thanks to the senior, who will definitely get a chance to keep kicking in college.

First Team Defense

DL: David Catalano, Sr., Canyon del Oro

CDO's most physical defensive lineman in the last decade according to coach Dusty Peace, the San Jose State-bound nose guard had 58 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks.

DL: Carson Martin, Sr., Canyon del Oro

Alongside Catalano, Martin had 31 tackles and four sacks for a defensive line that held opposing teams to 8.1 points a game during an undefeated regular season.

DL: Daniel Boice, Sr., Cienega

The athletic defensive end consistently got around the corner to pressure opposing quarterbacks and, for his efforts, tallied 43 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks.

DL: Jake Walker, Sr., Sabino

The aggressive defensive tackle broke through the line time and time again, racking up eight sacks, and was influential in the Sabercats' three shutouts.

LB: Blake Martinez, Jr., Canyon del Oro

Great size and strength only complement Martinez's uncanny knack for finding the guy with ball, evidenced by the junior's staggering 111 tackles and nine sacks. (Defensive Player of the Year)

LB: Rolly Escarcega, Sr., Catalina Foothills

The man in the middle for Foothills, Escarcega was an often impenetrable second line of defense for the Falcons, recording 97 tackles.

LB: Clarence Williams, Sr., Amphitheater

A big part of the Panthers' ability to hold teams to 8.5 points a game during Amphi's 10-game winning streak, Williams racked up 77 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks.

LB: Conner Siegel, Sr., Salpointe Catholic

Teams often struggled to run on the Lancers thanks in part to Siegel, who used excellent field vision and quickness to total 105 tackles and a team-high 10 sacks.

DB: Brandon Perkins, Sr., Desert View

When he wasn't returning kickoffs for touchdowns or otherwise dominating on offense, Perkins made a habit of breaking up pass plays and making picks as a safety.

DB: Mitch Fischer, Jr., Ironwood Ridge

Perhaps the most dynamic DB in town, Fischer, a strong safety, used his speed to break up pass plays and his strength to come up and shut down the run.

DB: Tyler Williams, So., Ironwood Ridge

Only a sophomore, Williams' athleticism at free safety stood out for an Ironwood Ridge team that relied quite heavily on its DBs to make big plays.

DB: Samuel Nunez, Sr., Amphitheater

Besides being a 1,000-yard rusher, he had six interceptions and was a key to Amphi's bend-but-don't-break defense, which gave up very few big plays.

All-purpose: Zach Davis, Sr., Cienega

The stats speak for themselves: Davis recorded 52 tackles and 8 1/2 sacks, forced two fumbles, had three interceptions and scored two defensive touchdowns.

P: Drew Riggleman, Sr., Sahuaro

4A-5A PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Kris O'Dowd, Sr., Salpointe Catholic

It's unorthodox for an offensive lineman to be player of he year. It's also uncommon for one to be as dominant as O'Dowd, who pancaked so many would-be tacklers on their backs it was impossible to keep track. He emerged as one of American's best players.

/////

1A-3A PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Heath Allred, Sr. Thatcher

Thatcher started the year 0-3. then Allred became a megastar. He rushed for 1,973 yards this season — 732 yards came in the four-game 2A state tournament — as the Eagles rebounded to win the state title.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Jack Darlington, WR, Salpointe Catholic

No Southern Arizona football player was more complete than Salpointe Catholic’s Jack Darlington.

As a senior, Darlington led Salpointe in receptions (45) and receiving yards (1,079), and scored nine touchdowns as the Lancers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state playoffs.

When he was not posting nearly one-fourth of Salpointe’s total offensive yards, Darlington also played cornerback and returned punts.

He helped Salpointe clinch its third straight region title by returning four punts for 176 yards, including a 70-yarder for a touchdown, in the Lancers’ Week 11 win over Mountain View.

Darlington, who also plays basketball and baseball, is planning to play football in college.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Nemer Hassey, Cienega

New programs are supposed to struggle. They are supposed to lose and take their lumps as the doormats of the region.

But in three years, Cienega coach Nemer Hassey has not only bucked that trend, he has put it into a headlock and turned one of Southern Arizona’s newest programs into a contender.

Despite losing a handful of key seniors from last year’s 8-3 state playoff team, Hassey’s Bobcats improved in 2004.

After losing to Sabino in Week 7, Cienega went on a four-game winning streak to finish the regular season with an 8-2 record, capturing the program’s first 4A Kino Region title.

One week later, the Bobcats won their first playoff game, a 30-7 decision over Ironwood Ridge.

2000 High School Football All-Stars

Meet Southern Arizona's top high school football players of 2000.

Player of the Year

David Coronado, Sunnyside

David Coronado was the epitome of the all-around player. The 5-foot-10-inch, 190-pound senior linebacker was the leading tackler on a defense that allowed only 8.3 points and 204.9 yards per game.

Coronado returned two fumbles and one interception for touchdowns, with the interception resulting in the game-winning points in Sunnyside's 21-17 win over Scottsdale Saguaro that propelled the Blue Devils to their first ever Class 4A state championship appearance.

On offense, Coronado was the backup running back yet still ran for 1,112 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Coach of the Year

Pat Nugent, Canyon del Oro

After Nugent took over a CDO program that had hit rock bottom the year before, going 0-10 despite being the school with the largest enrollment in Southern Arizona.

Under him, the Dorados had one of the best ever single-season turnarounds, going 6-4 and narrowly missing a berth in the 5A state playoffs. Two of CDO's wins came over 5ASouthern Region champ Salpointe Catholic and perennial power Sabino.

Nugent's previous coaching experience came as an assistant and then head coach at Flowing Wells, where he was 18-13 in three years before going to CDO in 2000.
