Re: Th Nov. 6 letter “Bible detective at work.”
I think the author of the letter is on to something. His hunch about the identity of the Anti-Christ may be more than crazy speculation. Evil emanates from the suspect’s face and mouth, and he’s a trickster supreme. Thinking back to the 1976 movie “The Omen”, perhaps a skin check is in order. As with little Damien in the movie, will the proof be found beneath that unusual hair?

Elections matterAs we complete our latest election cycle it’s good to take note of previous voter decisions. In 2017, voters passed a proposition, the Public Safety Tax Oversight, imposing a sales tax that paid for upgrades and improvement to Tucson Police and Tucson Fire Departments.

As a member of the Citizen commission, we received notice last week that two new fire pump equipment have been delivered to Fire station 9, which is the busiest stations in the city, responding to 16,207 calls in 2022. They are recipients of Pierce Enforcer fire pump for three shifts of 16 employees, including an engine company, ladder, paramedic units and medical staff to serve Tucson. Station 22 located at 6810 S. Alvernon Way received a new heavy-duty rescue vehicle, offering life-saving compressor units and back-up power for emergency vehicles.
Long after the vote, the City staff is insuring that the monies authorized are used to continue to secure a safe and responsive police and fire departments to serve us all.

Dismantling Democracy
As a Christian against Trump and a believer of separation of church and state, I am very disturbed with the actions of the Religious Right. Everyone should be aware of what we face if Trump is reelected. It is spelled out in Project 2025 which is led by the Heritage Foundation and Mark Meadows. It is a playbook for a potential future Republican president to start expanding authoritarian power on day one. It gives instructions for the president to destroy independence of federal agencies, eliminate the Department of Education, and overturn the New Deal. If that doesn’t scare you, I don’t know what will.

22nd St. Bridge Project
Citizens appreciate the 22nd Bridge project pause after we voiced concerns about dangers the design created for bicyclists, motorists and surrounding neighborhoods.
Two of three design flaws were fixed after public feedback during the Sept. 5 meeting. Getting cyclists out of the middle of 6 lanes of traffic and not forcing them to cross 3 lanes of traffic to get to the center.
The 3rd issue of permanently removing vehicle access to Aviation 210 was not addressed.
The resulting harm from stacking of cars in surrounding neighborhoods needs to be seriously considered. Since 22nd, a major flow, is used by commuters from the east side saving 25 minutes of time compared with other routes. Vehicles will cut across Tucson Blvd. and Country Club. Neighborhoods depending on 210 will be forced down Broadway. This, combined with the planned haircut to 5th/6th, means a lot of congestion and greenhouse gases in a small area, especially when adding in the ballpark and zoo visitors.
This is unfair to surrounding, at risk neighborhoods.

UA incompetence
Re: the Nov. 8 article “UA president says ‘draconian cuts’ coming.”
The Daily Star editions of Nov. 7 and 8 have once again shown a light on just how poorly the U of A is run. The university just realized it is running out of money. A professor asked how this could and was told by President Robbins he thought they had more. He said ‘we made a bet on spending money. We just overshot.
Robbins also mentioned spending on “moonshot”programs, but provided no detail. It was acknowledged a $55 million loan to the athletic depart. The problem with all of this is that the money he is playing with belongs to the taxpayers. I feel Governor Hobbs should initiate a forensic audit of the U of A. No legal firm should be involved, because the taxpayers are owed ALL the information.

Traffic controls poor
The Sheriff’s closing off of eastbound Sunrise at Los Palominos midday today (Nov. 8), and diverting two lanes of east bound traffic onto single lane rural Hacienda del Sol may have solved their immediate problem on Sunrise, but created bumper-to-bumper traffic congestion on Hacienda del Sol all the way to River Road. The Sheriff did not provide any further controls to get cars moving onto River River to relieve the congestion, as if we were all on our own after their dumping traffic onto Hacienda del Sol. Good job of traffic management? I don’t think so!

Drivers Education 101
In school we learned that any time there are two or more lanes in each direction, slower drivers should stay in the right lane. Recently, I have noticed more slow drivers using the left lane. Obviously, a lot of people have forgotten what they learned, so, with a nod to Jeff Foxworthy, I thought I would share some tips to know if you are in the correct lane. If the driver behind you is tailgating for an extended period, you might be in the wrong lane. If the driver behind is flashing his lights, blowing the horn or mouthing words you can’t make out, you might be in the wrong lane. If the driver is swerving like an Indy driver at the start of a race, you might be in the wrong lane and lastly, if he is waiving with that special finger, you might be in the wrong lane.

Put it on the ballot
Ohio has clearly spoken — women must be allowed to make decisions about their own bodies, in concert with their physicians. The majority of voters did not want politicians to ever again interfere with a woman’s access to abortion and so, they put it in their constitution. Good for Ohio. Now, Arizona must also enshrine a woman’s right to govern her own bodies in our constitution. But first it needs to get on the ballot. Please look for volunteers who are collecting valid signatures at public locations, like libraries, and sign the petition to put the issue before all voters. Let’s make certain Arizonan women will not lose a right they have held since the 1970’s. The “right to choose” starts with making sure we have the choice to vote on safe, legal abortions.
