To the editor:
Today is the day that new Medicaid eligibility rules take effect, removing eligibility for certain
lawfully present immigrants who do not hold green cards. In Arizona, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) estimates that between 20,000 and 34,000 legal (yes, legal) immigrants are losing full health coverage starting today. Remember that this impacts us all. If people cannot afford primary, preventive care, they will utilize emergency departments, putting a strain both in terms of patient load and financial viability. We can look forward to longer wait times in emergency departments, as well as the possible closure of hospitals in rural areas that will not be able to withstand an influx of uninsured patients. Remember, this is the result of HR1, the One Big Beautiful Bill, which our representative, Juan Ciscomani, voted to approve. He can say what he wants about supporting his constituents, but actions speak louder than words.
