Responding to Richard Bechtold's letter of February 04. Obviously Mr. Bechtold does not write from the experience of a bicyclist who has to contend with motorists every day.
It is actually safer for a bicyclist to assert a space well into the travel lane, to discourage unsafe passing. What is unsafe is to allow yourself to be crowded to the shoulder where you are less visible and where you have nowhere else to go if a motorist does pass too close.
And to his point about who pays for the roads. We are talking here about the surface grid. This is largely funded from local sales taxes, which everyone pays.
