Sunscreen is crucial for skin protection, but not all types are the same, chemical and mineral sunscreens differ in how they block UV rays. Chemical sunscreens are popular for their easy application and smooth finish but have faced scrutiny over trace absorption into the bloodstream. While this absorption hasn’t been proven harmful, chemical sunscreens can irritate sensitive skin more than other options. Mineral sunscreens use physical blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed. They work by reflecting UV rays instead of absorbing them, making them an effective and safe alternative to chemical-based products. Mineral sunscreens tend to offer slightly broader protection, but their thick texture sometimes discourages people from applying enough. However, modern mineral sunscreens have improved significantly, with lighter formulas and tinted options to reduce visible residue on the skin. No matter which type you choose, applying enough sunscreen is essential, about a shot glass full every few hours, with SPF 30 or higher.
