Mexican Man Killed By ICE In Houston Was Not The Search Target
A Mexican man who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Houston was not the person federal authorities had been looking for, officials have said. According to Democratic congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, the immigration agency confirmed that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo “was not a target.” Salgado Araujo, a Mexican homebuilder who had lived in the US without authorization for 35 years, was on his way to work with three other men when the shooting occurred. In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that federal agents were looking for a person they believed to be in the van being driven by Salgado Araujo. DHS said that officers observed a white van with an “individual who resembled the target,” and proceeded to stop the vehicle. According to a statement made by ICE, Salgado Araujo attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon, prompting federal officers to shoot at him in self-defense. Videos or photos of the incident have not yet been released by federal officials, and DHS has said that the officers involved in the incident were not wearing body cameras. The department said that the officers had not yet been issued the body cameras, blaming the delay on Democrats due to the recent government shutdown.
