If elected, El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, would make history as the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. On the campaign trail, El-Sayed has taken an outspoken stance on foreign policy, characterizing Israel's military offensive in Gaza as genocide while arguing that US resources sent to Israel should be redirected to domestic priorities, including healthcare, affordable housing, and infrastructure. The broader Michigan Democratic ticket also features current Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson running for governor, alongside Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, who is seeking election as the state's next secretary of state.
