Hidden Ancestors Found in Human DNA by UC Berkeley
Researchers at UC Berkeley have identified genetic traces from two previously unknown human lineages hidden in modern DNA. One “ghost” lineage interbred with early modern humans in Africa more than 50,000 years ago and contributes roughly 0.5% to 1% of the genome in individuals today. A second “super-archaic” lineage dates back about 1.8 million years and appears to have mixed with Denisovans before some of its DNA reached modern humans. Published in Science, the findings offer new insight into the complex network of ancient human evolution.
