The SaddleBrooke SkyGazers Astronomy Club will present Dr. Lockwood Carlson, a retired scientist, SaddleBrooke resident and current Vice-President of our SkyGazers Astronomy Club on Sunday, November 9. The program presentation will be held at the DesertView Theater, located at 39900 S. Clubhouse Drive, at 7 p.m. Dr. Carlson’s presentation will focus on the role of Tucson and the University of Arizona in current innovations in Astronomy, including the James Webb Space Telescope, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and the Vera Rubin Observatory.

These three instruments are revolutionizing our understanding of the cosmos in Astronomy and Astrophysics. He will give examples of new research including theories on the first stars and galaxies, the evolution of dark energy and cosmic dynamics such as supernovae and kilonovae.

Following his research thesis on electrodynamics of black holes at Princeton and Wyoming, Dr. Carlson received his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Wyoming. As a member of the faculty at the University of Minnesota, he held the Renier Chair in Technological Leadership and subsequently retired from the 3M company as a Corporate Scientist. He continues to consult and serves on boards in the fields of advanced and emerging technologies. Dr. Carlson has instructed courses on energy issues, climate science, modern physics, cosmology and nanotechnology, including courses here at the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) in SaddleBrooke and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Arizona.

The SaddleBrooke SkyGazers Astronomy Club meets monthly (and typically) on the second Sunday evening (at 7 p.m.) at the DesertView Theater. The next star parties are scheduled for Wednesday, November 12 and Thursday, December 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the SaddleBrooke Softball fieldparking lot. The public is welcome to both meetings and star parties. Club and Star Party information can be obtained by emailing Sam Miller at twoyosemite@gmail.com.
