Father’s Day is approaching in June, and it’s a perfect opportunity to talk about the often-overlooked topic of men’s self-care. I frequently hear my clients say, “My husband really needs to come see you, but he doesn’t think a massage will help.” Or “my husband has chronic pain, but he had a massage once, and he doesn’t like them.” It’s disappointing to hear this so often because massages can be incredibly beneficial for everyone, regardless of gender. So, guys, this article is dedicated to YOU! Embrace the idea of self-care and give yourself a massage.

Approximately 40 percent of my clients are men who appreciate how massage improves their quality of life. One client, a motorcycle rider in his mid-70s, gets weekly massages despite his buddies making fun of him. He says they miss out because while they’re struggling with aches and pains, he enjoys better health thanks to his weekly treatments. “I’d rather spend my money on my quality of life than on pills, surgeries and shots,” he says. When he went through a knee replacement, I worked to enhance what his physical therapist was doing to help heal and recover better.

Many of my male clients have stories about how massage has helped their lives. Helping them play golf, pickleball, tennis, hiking and keeping them able to travel and explore. We look at the issues realistically and I work to help them achieve their goals. Often complimenting what a doctor is talking to them about or what a physical therapist is doing for them, if they have an acute injury or replacement surgery.

Let’s address the biggest argument I hear from men.

“I don’t like massages.” Not every massage or massage therapist is the same. It’s about finding what works for you.

Many men come in asking for a “deep tissue” massage. They often tell me stories about their couples massage on vacation—too soft, too fluffy and ineffective. I hear you.

I challenge you to explore therapeutic massage. Find a skilled therapist who addresses your specific needs, whether it’s chronic pain, injury recovery or stress relief. Communicate your goals and let them tailor the session for you. You might discover that massages can be transformative.

Think of it as an adventure in self-care. Discover what helps your body heal. You might end up like my client in his mid-70s, who swears by his weekly treatments despite his buddies’ jokes. While others deal with chronic pain, he enjoys life with a smile.
