The Arizona Wildcats lost ace JC Cloney to an injury two pitches into Friday night’s game at Washington State. That was the only thing that went even remotely wrong for the surging UA. The Cats tallied 21 hits, 10 of them going for extra bases, on the way to a 19-5 rout of the Cougars in Pullman, Washington.
Cal Stevenson, Alfonso Rivas and JJ Matijevic all honored for the 13th-ranked UA, which improved to a 22-7 overall and 6-4 in Pac-12 play. Rivas and Matijevic’s shots both came as part of a 12-run sixth inning; Matijevic also had a two-run double in the frame.
Rivas finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Quintana finished 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.
Cloney exited after recording just one out with what the UA simply described as "an injury." He was replaced by Rivas, who pitched into the fourth inning before being replaced by Cody Deason. Deason earned the win, while Luke Soroko earned a save for pitching the final 3 1/3 innings. The UA will play Wazzu (14-13. 1-6) again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
