Arizona forward Lauri Markkanen was named Pac-12 Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats to a sweep of the Los Angeles schools, the first such honor for a UA player this season.
Markkanen averaged 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the Wildcats’ wins at USC and UCLA. He also shot 14-of-22 from the field (.636) and 8-of-10 (.800) from 3-point range over the two games.
Markkanen is the fifth freshman to win the award so far this season, the second-most in a season since the award was created in 1983, trailing only the seven rookie selections in 2007-08.
Among others, Markkanen beat out Utah's Kyle Kuzma, who led the Utes to a road sweep in Washington when they were without center David Collette.
