1914-57 – Hank Leiber with James Fred "Pop" McKale in the 1930s, the University of Arizona's most-famous coach and first official athletic director. During that time he was twice the baseball coach, and served stints as basketball and football coach. He is a charter member of the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.

He oversaw Arizona's move from the Border Conference to the Western Athletic Conference, hired baseball coach Jerry Kindall and track coach Willie Williams, the first African-American head coach in history of Div. I athletics. He was involved in the planning of McKale Center.

He shepherded the university's entrance into the Pac-10 conference and hired Fred Snowden, the first Black basketball coach in Div. 1. Strack, the former head basketball coach at Michigan, helped open McKale Center and watched as the UA developed into a regional power.
