Taylor Moore eyes his putt on the ninth green during the second round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Country Club, Friday, June 30, 2023, in Detroit.
The July 4th holiday has come and gone, and now the PGA Tour heads to TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. Below are odds, best bets, and sportsbook promotions for this week's event including 2023 John Deere Classic props.
2023 John Deere Classic odds, picks, and props
The John Deere Classic has existed in some form since 1971. It's been hosted by TPC Deere Run since 2000 and has been called the John Deere Classic since 1999.
The event has become known as a low-scorer’s paradise, with a winning score of 18-under par or better in every tournament played since 2009.
Recent winners include J.T. Poston and Lucas Glover, while past champions include Jordan Spieth and Bryson DeChambeau.
2023 John Deere Classic best bets: Seamus Power outright (+4500 or better), Top 20 (+190)
The results have not been there lately for Seamus Power, but this line is far too high in a field of this strength to discount the Irishman.
Power excels in several key areas including having one of the top-ranked birdie-or-better percentages in the field this week.
He’s been one of the best par 3 players on tour this season and has a good enough par-4 scoring average along with bogey avoidance numbers to like this week.
He’s made all four cuts at this event and has a pair of top-20 finishes, including eighth place a season ago, making him one of the top course history fits in the field.
John Deere Classic picks: Russell Henley top 20 (-115 or better)
If we're going with horses for courses, then we have to look Henley's way, even if his odds are too low due to the strength of the field.
In three trips to TPC Deere Run, Henley has made all three cuts along with finishing 2nd (2019) and 11th (2021) in his previous two starts. He's a perfect fit for the statistical profile, excelling on approach and specifically with his wedges.
While settling for a top 20 wager here takes away some value, there's also the very realistic chance that Henley doesn't make enough birdies to contend for the title, even if he plays well.
John Deere prop bets: Taylor Moore top 30 (-110 or better)
Taylor Moore was in the mix last weekend at Detroit Golf Club with a 21-under score, proving that a low-scoring tournament is one he can compete in.
The 29-year-old winner of this year’s Valspar Championship finished T4 at the Rocket Mortgage and is somehow near even money to finish in the top 30 of a field that is absolutely weaker by comparison.
Moore ranks 35th on tour this season in par 4 scoring and 54th in bogey avoidance, placing him in the upper echelon of this field in both categories. He’ll need the putter to stay hot, but he’s one of the best there is at converting short-range opportunities.
John Deere Classic props: First Round Leader: Ludvig Aberg (+4500 or better)
Ludvig Aberg is fresh out of Texas Tech and already making waves on the PGA Tour after just a handful of professional starts. In this event, he’s going to get much more attention from the betting public than he has so far.
While the odds are a bit low to win an event in just his fourth pro start, Aberg has been on fire for three Thursdays in a row, including a 67 to begin the Travlers two weeks ago and a 65 to begin the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week.
TPC Deere Run is a course that should suit his well-rounded game, which has been especially excellent off the tee since the young Swede has turned pro.
At 45-to-1, Aberg has as good a chance as any other name near the top of the board to lead after Thursday.
2023 John Deere Classic long shots: Akshay Bhatia (+12500 or better), top 40 (+120)
We haven’t seen the 21-year-old American on a leaderboard since finishing fourth at the Mexico Open a few months ago.
Bhatia finished in fourth place (-18) and just like that event at Vidanta, this is a wide-open field going after a track set up for a birdie fest.
One of the most important things any golfer can do this week is make birdie on the many scorable holes, and Bhatia is a top-30 player in birdie-or-better percentage this season. In this field, he’s top 10 in birdies or better gained.
At this price, it’s hard not to take a stab at 125-to-1 for a player who many envision winning on the PGA Tour eventually. At plus money, it’s also a great finishing position wager such as top 40.
