Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are the favorites to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
So are Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs immune to the Super Bowl hangover, or is the Super Bowl hangover for the Chiefs defined as not going back-to-back?
The NFL’s most dominant team looks to enter dynasty territory in 2023, a season that will depend on Mahomes’ ability to deal to a new group of wide receivers.
2023 Chiefs win total prop: Over 11.5 wins (-134 or better)
Since it won the Super Bowl in 2019, KC has notched no fewer than 12 wins in a season and has made two Super Bowl appearances -- losing one in 2020 and winning it all in 2022.
Roster turnover is nothing new for the Chiefs. Since Patrick Mahomes became its starting quarterback in 2018, Kansas City’s offense has featured a bevy of pass-catchers, with tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill being the only mainstays.
The 2022 trade of Hill did not slow down the Chiefs’ offense, as it ranked as the league’s best with 7,032 yards -- over 600 more than the second-ranked Eagles.
Mahomes has proven that whether it’s Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman or Chris Conley catching passes, he can keep the offense humming.
That’s the story for the coming season, where both Hardman and fellow wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster departed in free agency. Mahomes will again navigate a revamped wide receiver room featuring new additions Richie James and second-round pick Rashee Rice.
That level of skill player roster attrition might limit most quarterbacks, but Mahomes has proven time and again that he can get the most of out his roster composition -- and 2023 should be no different.
Both James and Rice have displayed downhill speed, a trait that will complement the offensive scheme with returning wideouts Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney.
Kansas City won the Super Bowl in 2022 without a defined WR1 and 2023 should be no different.
The Over/Under on Kansas City’s wins sits at 11.5, and as the defending Super Bowl champions and a team that has not won fewer than 12 games since Mahomes entered the NFL, the Over seems the safest bet.
2023 NFL passing yards leader: Patrick Mahomes (+350 or better)
Mahomes led the league in passing in 2022 with 5,250 yards, and even with new faces in the wide receivers room, he should be considered the favorite to hit that mark once more.
2023 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year: Felix Anudike-Uzomah (+2500 or better)
Kansas State product Anudike-Uzomah has the length to make a true impact on the edge, and sacks factor heavily in Rookie of the Year voting.
