Rio Rico senior Carlos Villarreal was selected as Arizona’s Gatorade boys cross country runner of the year on Thursday.
Villarreal, who is signed to run for the Arizona Wildcats, was easily the best runner in the state last fall as he won the Division III state championship in 15 minutes 24 seconds.
Additionally, Villarreal led Rio Rico’s boys track to a state title last year by winning three individual championships.
He was named the Star's boys track and field athlete of the year last spring and then the boys cross country runner of the year in the fall.
