Slideshow: 2014 Pima County Sports Hall of Fame

David Adams: A Sunnyside High All-State tailback who became the first Arizona Wildcat to lead the Pac-12 in rushing (1,224 yards in 1986).

George Arias: After leading Pueblo High School to the 1990 state baseball championship, Arias set season home run records at Pima College and Arizona and later played third base for the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres.

Michael Bates: Ranked as the No. 2 overall recruit after leading Amphitheater High School to the state football playoffs for three years, Bates played two seasons at Arizona, won Pac-12 championships in the 100 and 200 meters, won a bronze medal at 200 meters in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and went on to become a five-time NFL Pro Bowl special teams player.

Dennis Bene: In 13 seasons as Salpointe Catholic’s football coach, Bene has gone 126-23, including an undefeated 2013 state championship.

Mario Castro: A state championship cross country runner at Sunnyside, Castro was a four-year letterman at Arizona and later helped coach state championship track teams at Pueblo High School.

Jim Crawford: All-State in both basketball and baseball at Rincon High School, Crawford was part of ASU’s 1969 NCAA championship team and later a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros.

Jim Flannery: Head boys basketball coach at Salpointe from 1973-93, and state championship boys golf coach at Salpointe in 1981 and 2004.

Frank Garcia:  An All-State football player at Salpointe, Garcia became a standout punter at Arizona and went on to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks.

Lacey Nymeyer John: The 2009 NCAA Woman of the Year, was a two-time NCAA individual swimming champion at Arizona and a silver medalist in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ray Kosanke: He was the center on Tucson High’s undefeated 1962 state basketball championship team, and later the captain of Stanford’s basketball team.

Rick McConnell: An all-city basketball player at Sahuaro High, McConnell helped the Cougars to the 1973 and 1974 baseball titles. Has coached Mesa Westwood High to more than 500 basketball victories.

Sandy Novak: Coached Sahuaro High to 402 volleyball victories, including 10 regional championships and was 201-62 coaching the Cougars’ boys volleyball team.

Oscar Romero: Tucson High’s long-time baseball coach won his 400^th game this season after a productive playing career at THS, Pima College and UTEP.

Tee Thelma Taylor: A Catalina High School grad set a world record in skydiving and was the overall women’s World Skydiving Champion in 1964.
