Arizona football: On streaking, celebrities, Jones, Zoo turnout

Seen and heard from Arizona Stadium during Saturday's game against UCLA.

No more streaking

No more streaking

You probably know him as “The Streaker.”

In 2011, the last time the Wildcats won against UCLA, he dressed as an official, ran onto the Arizona Stadium field, then ran across it as he stripped down to a red and white Speedo.

His name is Jacen Lankow, and he was at Arizona Stadium on Saturday, too.

“Rest assured,” Lankow said, “I’ll be staying in the stands this time.”

Lankow was banned from Arizona Stadium for two years, but since the ban was lifted in 2013, he’s been to a few games. Lankow graduated with a degree in natural resources and has since worked a variety of volunteer positions related to wildlife biology research. He still lives in Tucson.

Saturday, he shared with us some details about that wild 2011 night.

On the idea to streak: “It popped into my head after seeing a video of Daniel Tosh interviewing a kid who simply ran onto the field at a Phillies game. I decided I wanted to take the classic act of streaking and spice it up a bit with something memorable. I thought that at the very least, I’d have a cool college story to look back at.”

On getting past security: “A stroll past the on-field security with my access pass was all it took to be with the players and team staff on the sideline. I was standing there for probably 25 minutes before the perfect opportunity arose.”

On the aftermath: “I was actually able to watch a replay of the game in its entirety while I spent the night in jail (laughs).”

Big number

Big number

55: Passing yards from Anu Solomon before Arizona’s quarterback left the game in the first half with an apparent concussion. He did not return.

In the house

In the house

It was supposed to be a big night, so of course there were some big names at Arizona Stadium.

Stanley Johnson, the ex-Wildcat and current member of the Detroit Pistons, was in the crowd, and shown on the big screen in the first half to loud cheers.

On the sideline, former UA quarterback Willie Tuitama, donning a ponytail, looked on. Tuitama had one of Arizona’s all-time signature wins in 2005 when, as a true freshman, he guided the unranked, 2-7 Wildcats to a 52-14 upset of the No. 7-ranked Bruins.

Also in the crowd: actor Donovan Carter, a star on HBO’s “Ballers” TV series, who was a defensive lineman for the Bruins from 2008-12.

Quotable

Quotable

“That was the shortest touchdown run of Jerrard Randall’s career.” — pressbox P.A. Danny Martinez, after Randall rushed for a 39-yard touchdown on his first carry in the second quarter. Randall also has rushing TDs of 73, 72 and 57 yards this season.

Jones, Jones, Jones, Jones and Jones

Jones, Jones, Jones, Jones and Jones

Cayleb Jones and family had a big presence.

Arizona’s receiver — listed as questionable on the weekly injury report — started and had four catches for 44 yards in the Wildcats’ 56-30 loss.

His mother, Maneesha, and father, Robert, were in the stands. Robert played 10 seasons in the NFL. Cayleb’s brother, Levi, was at the game on an unofficial visit. He’s a 2017 defensive recruit receiving some interest from the Wildcats.

Meanwhile, in Greenville, North Carolina, Cayleb’s other brother, Isaiah, caught a touchdown in East Carolina’s win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Tweet of the night

Tweet of the night

“Gonna be a long night for my homie rich rod cats” — longtime NFL quarterback Shaun King. King played for Rodriguez when he was the offensive coordinator at Tulane in 1997-98.

Zona Zoo

Zona Zoo

Up since before sunrise as Arizona hosted ESPN’s “College GameDay,” the ZonaZoo still came out in full force for a 5 p.m. kickoff.

At capacity, the student section was forced to turn late-arriving students away.
