Here's a look at the Star's boys cross country runners of the year since 1999.

1999 boys cross country runner of the year

1999 boys cross country runner of the year

Name: Mike Howard

School: Canyon del Oro

Year in school: Senior

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: Mike Howard of Canyon del Oro made the most of his one season running cross country in Tucson.

Howard had the best showing of any Southern Arizona runner at the 5A state meet earlier this month, finishing fourth in a time of 16 minutes, 28 seconds.

Howard, a Canyon del Oro senior, and his family moved from Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, during the summer after his father took on a new job.

A proven runner on the Chicago cross country scene, Howard, the 1999 Arizona Daily Star Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, quickly made his move against the Southern Arizona competition. Howard finished second at regionals, one second behind Sierra Vista Buena's Nathan Franz.

Howard was not too thrilled with the finish.

"It was OK, not too disappointing," Howard said. "But, I did not reach my goals."

Howard's goals were high for a reason: He had posted better times during his junior year in Illinois.

The times were the first thing that CDO cross country coach Rick Glider knew about his new runner.

"The first week of August, he called my house a couple of times," Glider said. "I called back and talked to his mom, who told me some of his times.

"I thought, 'OK, I can deal with this. This looks real good.' "

Howard lived up to the hype, setting four course records during the season.

Most impressive is that Howard accomplished this while making a somewhat smooth transition from the cool, grassy courses in Chicago to the the rougher terrain and hotter weather in Tucson.

"I talked to him about the heat," Glider said. "If it was a problem, it did not show much."

Glider is disappointed that he will only get to coach Howard once.

"I would have loved to work with him for four years." — Joel Flom, 1999

2000 boys cross country runner of the year

2000 boys cross country runner of the year

Name: Josh Robles

School: Rio Rico

Year in school: Senior

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: In the 3A boys race, Rio Rico's Josh Robles (16:28) finally beat his rival, Blaine Goklish (16:39) of Whiteriver Alchesay, to win the individual title and help the Hawks capture the team championship with a score of 53.

Last year Goklish beat Robles by 17 seconds to win the title, but the Rio Rico star was not about to let that happen again.

"I was so focused (that) no one could come up to me and try to tell me a joke or anything before the race to make me laugh," Robles said. "It would have had to been damn funny to make me laugh." — Dan Rosen, 2000

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: Rincon's Stephen Bakke finished eighth at state, making him the top Tucson-area finisher. Bakke said he was pleased with his effort.

"I ran pretty well, but I think I psyched myself up a little too much before the race. It's nice to be Tucson's top runner, but I still would have liked to have done better." — Danny Van Klaveren, 2001

Year in school: Junior

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: In the 4A-II competition, Desert View junior Victor Zazueta won the boys championship in 16:39.

"It feels great; it's just amazing to win," Zazueta said.

Zazueta found himself surrounded by runners from Page for the majority of the race, but ran with them to the end until he pulled away.

"We got to 800 meters and we spread out a little," he said. "Somebody was always there pushing somebody else." — Jason Scheer, 2005

"I wasn't predicting us to win this thing," Whitt said. "We were the runner-up last year and didn't want it to happen again. Everyone kept getting faster at the right time." — Casey Crowe, 2007

2008 boys cross country runner of the year

2008 boys cross country runner of the year

Name: Fabian Romero

School: Sunnyside

Year in school: Junior

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: As Sunnyside's Fabian Romero sprinted down the stretch of Wednesday's Valerie McGregor Rattler Invitational, no one would have guessed he was finishing a three-mile race.

After crossing the finish line at Tortolita Field, he calmly strolled to the water stand and sipped from a cup as he walked away. After all, he had some time before others would finish.

He was done in 17 minutes 27.4 seconds, more than 38 seconds in front of the second-place finisher, Sierra Vista Buena's C.J. Metcalf.

Romero's performance helped Sunnyside win the boys portion of the meet with 37 points.

"Instead of just going out and trying to beat everyone, I tried to save my energy," Romero said. "I liked it. I held back a lot, and then I just took off and sprinted in. I had a lot of energy left." — Michael J. Craven, 2008

2009 boys cross country runner of the year

2010 boys cross country runner of the year

2010 boys cross country runner of the year

Name: Alejandro Montaño

School: Catalina

Year in school: Senior

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: Catalina's Alejandro Montaño has been one of fastest runners in Arizona for two years and finished his high school career on Saturday with no individual state cross country titles.

The reason: For the second consecutive season, Montaño shared a division with the state's best runner.

Last year it was a Flagstaff Sinagua runner who set a Cave Creek Golf Course record. On Saturday, it was Tuba City's Billy Orman who set a new course record in 15 minutes 3.32 seconds to top Montaño (15:47.72).

Orman won a 3A title last year, but Tuba City was grouped into Division III this year in accordance with the AIA's new realignment. Montaño's Trojans used to be 4A-II.

"It is a little weird how it has happened this way," Montaño admitted. "Every single time, I always get grouped with someone so good."

More than anything, Montaño said he was disappointed in his race. He stayed with Orman up to the two-mile mark, then began to fade.

"He kept putting little surges on me and every time he did, I kept coming back and coming back," Montaño said. "But at the two-mile, I just couldn't keep going. I ran out of gas." — Michael J. Craven, 2010

2011 boys cross country runner of the year

2011 boys cross country runner of the year

Name: Ryan Silva

School: Rincon/University

Year in school: Junior

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: Junior Ryan Silva from Rincon/University is excited for his senior season, too, after finishing within 11 seconds of a Division I victory Saturday.

Silva was in striking distance of defending champ Bernia Montoya (from Yuma Cibola) for the entire race, notching a time of 15:57.60 and a second-place finish. Last year, Silva was 18th.

"This is actually the first time I've had him within my sights during the race," Silva said of Montoya. "That's helpful to me, to be able to see how he runs. It was an improvement for me." — Michael J. Craven, 2011

2012 boys cross country runner of the year

2012 boys cross country runner of the year

Name: Andy Trouard

School: Salpointe Catholic

Year in school: Senior

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: Salpointe Catholic senior Andy Trouard won eight state titles last season, none of which came in cross country.

That changed on Saturday.

Trouard snagged his ninth championship as a Lancer and first in cross country when he won the boys Division II title in 16 minutes 1.99 seconds.

And he made it look easy, covering the 3.1 miles at Cave Creek Golf Course all alone for the most part. That was also his pattern at the sectional meet when he broke the course record he had set there earlier this year.

"I'm so super happy," Trouard said. He hoped Salpointe could leave with the team title. However, that went to Cave Creek Cactus Shadows, which scored 78 points to top Canyon del Oro, the defending team champions. The Dorados were second with 142 points. — Daniel Gaona, 2012

2013 boys cross country runner of the year

2013 boys cross country runner of the year

Name: Harvey Nelson

School: Catalina Foothills

Year in school: Senior

Sport: Boys cross country

From the archives: Saturday, it was better to be good than Lucky.

Just ask Harvey Nelson.

Catalina Foothills' senior standout beat Gilbert Campo Verde's Lucky Schreiner in the 3.1-mile race by less than half a second to take home the Division II individual state title. His time of 15 minutes 25.64 seconds was the best of the day at Cave Creek Golf Course.

"Right at the end, the nerves were going off in my head," Nelson said. "I was like, 'Did I win it? Did I win it?' "

"It was really just super exciting and super nerve-racking at the same time."

Nelson said he thought Schreiner was pulling away during the race but noticed the junior started to falter as they neared the final stretch.

"I was like, 'This is my chance. I'm going to push it real hard here,' " Nelson said.

Nelson was able to push past his pain and edge Schreiner for the first time in three tries this season. His individual title propelled Foothills to the team championship, as the Falcons (148 points) edged Phoenix Greenway (157) and Mountain View (183). — Kyle Johnson, 2013

2014 boys cross country runner of the year

2014 boys cross country runner of the year

Name: Carlos Villarreal

School: Rio Rico

Year in school: Senior

Sport: Boys cross country

What he did: At one point this season, Villarreal had the fastest 5K high school time in the nation. The Rio Rico senior ran away with the boys Division III state championship, winning in an overall best time of 15 minutes 24 seconds. The week before that, Villarreal led the Hawks to a section championship as he cruised to the boys individual title in 15:33, almost 30 seconds ahead of second-place finisher and teammate Oscar Amaya.

Top performance: Villarreal won the Desert Twilight Invitational in 14:49.99 on Oct. 3, giving him the fastest high school boys 5K time in the country. It didn’t hold for too long but is still No. 9 in the United States.

What’s next: Villarreal is signed with the UA to run both cross country and track. He was also the Star’s boys track and field athlete of the year last spring as Rio Rico won the team title, so this won’t be the last time you hear his name.

Runner-up: Nathan Thomas, Salpointe Catholic. The senior won the boys Division II championship and was the closest one to knocking off Villarreal. The two finished first and second at the Rattler Invitational in October.
