Amanda Beard
• Olympics: 1996, Atlanta; 2000, Sydney; 2004, Athens; and 2008, Beijing.
• Local connection: Attended the University of Arizona from 2000 to 2001.
• Known for: The swimmer broke into the Olympic scene in Atlanta, winning two individual silver medals and a gold in the 400-meter relay. At Arizona she won a national championship in the 200-yard breast stroke. In Athens she set an Olympic record and won gold in the 100-meter breast stroke.
• Current: Beard published her book "In the Water They Can't See You Cry: A Memoir" in April.
