This continues a countdown to the July 27 start of the Olympics with Southern Arizona moments and figures from previous Games.
• Olympian: Ed Caruthers
• Olympics: 1964, Tokyo; 1968, Mexico City
• Local connection: Ran track for the University of Arizona from 1966 to 1967
• Known for: Caruthers made his Olympic debut in 1964 when he placed eighth in the high jump. In 1968 he went on to win the silver medal in the high jump. In 1976 he became a charter member of the University of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.
• Current: Caruthers now teaches special education courses in the Garden Grove (Calif.) School District and is active in the Garden Grove Special Olympics program. He also worked as a part-time track and field coach at Santa Ana College in California until it was decided they would not field a team in 2012.
