The athlete's villages of modern Olympics look a bit different than those of decades past. Here's a look.

One of the main competitors' camps for the 1948 Summer Olympic Games is under construction in the Royal Park at Richmond, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. The camp is situated on high ground and provides an extensive view over the ancient deer parks and surrounding countryside. A former army convalescent hospital, the camp has been converted to accommodate 1,500 competitors and a domestic staff of 200. Though the arrangements are of necessity on a utility basis, the social needs of the competitors are being catered for and there will be writing rooms, cafe, milk bar and a cinema seating 500 persons. The camp will have its own shops, including bookstall, cobblers, hairdressers dry-cleaning and laundry services, bank and post office.
